Job Description

Performs, evaluates and reports routine and STAT laboratory tests on blood, urine, and other body fluids. Tests are performed using various automated and manual methods.

The Senior Medical Laboratory Technician hired for the purpose of working on 2nd and 3rd shifts must be able to perform testing as a “Generalist” in various laboratory departments.

The Senior Medical Laboratory Technician hired for the purpose of working on the 1st shift must be able to perform all required test procedures in the department(s) by which he/she has been hired. The Senior Medical Laboratory Technician works under the supervision of a Medical Technologist and/or Laboratory Supervisor.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Licensure and/or Certification

  • ASCP certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician required. Must be licensed as a Clinical Laboratory Technician by the New York State Education Department.

Total Education, Vocation Training & Experience

  • Associates degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or related science.
  • Previous laboratory experience preferred.

Skills and Abilities

  • Independent, mature, self-motivated, reliable and responsible
  • Able to serve the needs of patients ages neonatal to geriatric.

Proficiency or Productivity Standards

  • Able to deal with all types of customers in a pleasant, professional manner.
  • Able to handle numerous tasks simultaneously.
  • Must have excellent organizational skills.
  • Able to perform assigned duties in a timely manner with minimal supervision.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The position is located indoors under normal working conditions. Should be able to push/pull 25 lb., lift/move 15 lb. from floor to table, be able to perform moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a key board, writing and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such as data entry, typing and using photo copiers. Mobility requirements may include the ability to sit at a computer terminal or work station for a prolonged period of time in addition to being able to squat, stand and walk for a reasonable length of time and distance. Sensory requirements include the ability to articulate and comprehend the spoken English language in addition to being able to read the English language.

A

Operate sophisticated equipment per section procedures. This includes understanding and demonstrating the ability to use all equipment necessary for the performance of the job in the department.

Able to operate instrumentation and follow procedures to produce quality laboratory results

Perform quality control procedures as directed by supervision.

Quality Control results meet requirements for release of results. Supervisor review demonstrates accuracy in this area.

Notify supervision when supplies of standards, controls, reagents and other materials necessary for the proper function of the department need to be ordered.

Supplies are adequate to produce lab results as requested by customers.

Maintain and update his/her knowledge of laboratory medicine as well as hospital policies, procedures and guidelines.

Attends continuing education programs throughout the year. Completes hospital educational requirements and utilizes opportunities to learn whenever scheduling allows.

Continuing education records will be completed and forwarded to Human Resources annually regarding mandatory educational requirements.

Complete annual health assessment form as required, maintains current inoculations.

Current license as required by N.Y. State will be forwarded to Human Resources upon renewal or issuance.

Salary Range: $32.20-50.56/hour Pay is based on experience, skills, and education. Exempt positions under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) will be paid within the base salary equivalent of the stated hourly rates. The pay range may also vary within the stated range based on location.
