Responsibilities
YOUR ROLE IN CREATING THE UNIVERSITY’S PRESENT AND FUTURE
Join the SDSU Research Foundation (SDSURF) as our newest team member, where your technical expertise will help build a better foundation for groundbreaking research and community service. In this role, you aren’t just "managing servers" or "writing code"—you are building the digital backbone that empowers San Diego State University’s R1 research mission. You will balance the essential daily work of keeping our enterprise systems running smoothly with exciting modernization initiatives that strengthen our infrastructure for the future. You’ll be one of the collaborative experts we turn to ensure our financial management, human resources, and research administration systems are secure, user-focused, and ready to scale.
THE WORK YOU WILL DO AND MANAGE
- Build and Innovate: Design, code, and document custom applications, reports, and workflows using tools like Oracle PL/SQL and APEX to meet our team's needs.
- Keep the Engines Running: Help to configure and manage the servers (like Tomcat and ORDS) and Linux environments that keep our critical systems—especially Ellucian Banner—running smoothly every day.
- Secure our Digital Doors: Set up and manage Single Sign-On (SSO) using Azure Active Directory and digital certificates, ensuring our team can safely and easily access the tools they need.
- Modernize our Technology: Assist with system upgrades, maintaining Banner code (using Java), and integrating fresh technologies.
- Solve Complex Puzzles: Dive into tricky technical issues related to system performance and data integrity, fixing bottlenecks so everything works seamlessly.
- Bridge the Gap: Work closely with different departments, taking their real-world business needs and translating them into secure, scalable tech solutions.

- A Careful Problem-Solver: You have a knack for troubleshooting and look at the big picture to find long-term solutions, whether you're fixing a modern API integration or maintaining a legacy Banner application.
- A Natural Learner: You are curious and adapt quickly. You're always eager to expand your toolkit, whether that means diving into Oracle Databases or exploring Banner extensions on Eclipse IDE.
- A Team Player: You enjoy building relationships and working side-by-side with stakeholders to make sure the solutions we build truly help the organization.

HOW TO APPLY AND TIPS FOR MAKING IT THROUGH OUR HIRING PROCESS
You must apply through the SDSURF Career Page. Make sure your application is complete. Including a resume and cover letter is recommended. Respond to supplemental questions thoroughly.
WHAT OUR HIRING PROCESS IS LIKE
We work as fast as we can to make hiring decisions. However, it may take several weeks for all the parties involved to review your application. We keep in touch each step of the way and inform you of the status of your application.
ADDITIONAL APPLICANT INFORMATION:
- The salary range for this position is $7,371.00 - $10,813.70 depending upon qualifications and is non-negotiable.
- Hybrid Work Philosophy: We believe that a balanced approach to work—combining the flexibility of remote work with the collaborative energy of in-person engagement—creates the most effective and fulfilling environment for our organization. Remote work empowers individuals with autonomy, focus, and work-life balance, while in-office days foster connection, creativity, and shared purpose. Having at least two days in the office is essential to maintain strong interpersonal relationships, encourage spontaneous collaboration, and reinforce our shared culture. These in-person interactions help build trust, align teams, and spark innovation in ways that are difficult to replicate remotely. By embracing a hybrid model of two days in the office and three days remote, we enable both personal productivity and collective innovation, ensuring our culture remains strong, inclusive, and adaptable.
