Description:
Event Traffic Support Staff (Crosswalk and Vehicle Traffic)
Location: Vanderbilt University Campus, Nashville, TN
Provide safe, professional traffic and pedestrian control during campus events. You will support crosswalk operations, vehicle routing, curbside loading zones, and temporary closures while maintaining a calm, service-focused presence.
Key Responsibilities- Manage pedestrian flow at designated crosswalks and high-traffic walkways during arrivals, peak periods, and dismissals
- Control vehicle traffic at assigned intersections, drive lanes, garages, and drop-off zones using approved hand signals and cones/signage as directed
- Assist with temporary lane closures, detours, and restricted-access points per the event traffic plan
- Coordinate with the event lead, campus security, parking staff, and other stakeholders to keep traffic moving safely
- Use two-way radios and clear communication to report congestion, hazards, emergencies, or non-compliance
- Maintain situational awareness and proactive hazard prevention in crowded environments
- Deliver excellent customer service by giving directions, answering basic questions, and de-escalating issues professionally
- Follow all safety rules, PPE requirements, and site-specific instructions throughout the shift
- Complete basic shift documentation as required (incident notes, location assignments, timekeeping)
- Part-time, event-based shifts
- Typical shifts include evenings, early mornings, weekends, and occasional holidays
- Shift length commonly 4 to 10 hours depending on event needs
- Outdoor work with high pedestrian volumes and moving vehicles
- Required PPE: high-visibility apparel/vest, appropriate footwear, radio/earpiece as issued
- Must follow all site rules and safety protocols at all times
Event Traffic Supervisor or Site Lead

- Consistent communication and teamwork
- Zero tolerance for distraction while posted in active traffic or pedestrian conflict zones
- Reliable, punctual, and able to follow instructions precisely
- Comfortable interacting with the public in a busy campus environment
- Able to remain calm and alert under pressure and changing conditions
- Clear communication skills, both verbal and radio
- Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Ability to stand and walk for extended periods, lift and place cones/signs as needed
- Valid driver’s license preferred (not required unless assigned to a driving role)
- Prior traffic control, flagging, security, or event operations experience preferred
- Training/certifications preferred: Flagger, traffic control fundamentals, MUTCD familiarity (training can be provided depending on assignment)
