Structural Steel Model Checker: Building Accuracy Before Steel Hits the Shop
Do you have a sharp eye for structural steel detailing and the experience to catch problems before they reach fabrication or the field?
Join Ben’s Structural Fabrication as a Structural Steel Model Checker, where you’ll play a critical role in the quality and accuracy of our structural steel projects. You’ll independently review 3D models, fabrication and erection drawings, bills of material, and other detailing deliverables to identify discrepancies, conflicts, missing information, and constructability concerns before work is released.
This is an opportunity for an experienced structural steel detailing professional who understands how steel comes together—from the model and drawings through fabrication and erection—and takes pride in getting the details right.
Who We Are
Ben’s Structural Fabrication, located in Waite Park, Minnesota, is a locally owned and family-run fabrication company specializing in high-quality structural steel solutions. With a strong commitment to craftsmanship, teamwork, and community values, we take pride in delivering durable, reliable products built with integrity. Our team is dedicated to supporting customers, investing in our employees, and upholding the tradition of excellence the “Built by Ben’s” name represents.
Why Join Us
At Ben’s Structural Fabrication, we foster a culture built on teamwork, respect, accountability, and continuous improvement. As a member of our team, you’ll have the opportunity to contribute to high-quality structural steel projects, collaborate with experienced professionals across our organization, and help ensure our work is accurate and fabrication-ready before it reaches the shop.
We offer a competitive compensation and benefits package, which may include:
- Medical and dental insurance
- 401(k) plan with company match
- Generous paid time off and holidays
- Additional ancillary benefits
What You’ll Do
As a Structural Steel Model Checker at Ben’s Structural Fabrication, you will be responsible for:
- Check 3D Models & Drawings: Independently review structural steel 3D models, shop drawings, assembly and part drawings, erection drawings, and related detailing deliverables for accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance with project and Company requirements.
- Verify Fabrication & Erection Details: Check dimensions, elevations, member orientation and identification, connections, holes, bolts, welds, material information, and other critical requirements that affect fabrication, fit-up, installation, and project quality.
- Review Against Contract Documents: Compare models and drawings against structural and architectural drawings, specifications, design documents, and other project requirements to identify missing, conflicting, or unclear information.
- Create & Verify Redlines: Develop clear electronic redline markups, communicate required corrections to Detailers, and verify revisions are accurately incorporated before deliverables are released.
- Manage Revisions & Design Information: Confirm RFIs, design clarifications, Architect, Engineer, Customer, and internal review comments, and project revisions are properly incorporated into models, drawings, and project documentation.
- Review Bills of Material & Production Information: Verify bills of material, reports, material information, and other production outputs are consistent with checked models and drawings and identify issues that could affect procurement or fabrication.
- Identify Constructability Issues: Recognize detailing conflicts and potential fabrication or erection problems and work with Detailers, Project Managers, and other resources to resolve issues or obtain necessary clarification.
- Perform Final Quality Checks: Complete final reviews before detailing deliverables are released for customer review, procurement, fabrication, CNC processing, or field use.
- Support Detailing Quality: Collaborate across Detailing, Project Management, and Production to resolve technical concerns and continuously improve detailing accuracy, checking practices, and overall quality.
This is a full-time position based at our Waite Park, Minnesota facility. Work is primarily performed in an office environment, with periodic exposure to our structural steel production environment and construction sites.
Pay Transparency Statement
In accordance with pay transparency guidelines, the anticipated pay range for this position is $30.00 to $40.00 per hour. This range is an estimate and not a guarantee. Final compensation will be determined based on factors such as experience, qualifications, and role requirements. Eligible employees may also participate in company benefit programs, subject to plan terms and employment status.
