Position Summary

The Lead Physician Assistant is an exempt position with clinical and administrative duties within the Division. Clinical duties will remain consistent with current employed Physician Assistants within the department. Administrative duties will include, but not limited to, scheduling of departmental PAs, evaluating performance, recruitment, and quality assurance.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities Includes the Following:

• Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors
• Executing, supporting, ensuring compliance with hospital and departmental wide initiatives
• Creates and adjusts PAs work schedule to meet demand of patient care needs including approving/denying paid time off.
• Performs necessary evaluations on employed PAs.
• Involved with recruitment and on-boarding of PAs within the division.
• Work with appropriate disciplines to assure quality assurance in the delivery of high-quality care to patients.
• Address “day to day” issues/concerns of PA staff, scheduling needs, and patient needs.
• Work closely with Administrative Director of PA Services, Practice Manager, Chief or departmental Physicians, and staff to meet departmental goals.
• First Assist on surgical procedures.
• Facilitate the care of patients in the outpatient setting by assisting the Physician or autonomously assessing and treating patients within their Scope of Practice.
• Conducts physical exams, assesses health status, orders and interprets tests, prescribes medications, and treat illnesses including giving injections and suturing wounds. Consults with physicians as needed and refers to physicians for more complicated medical cases or cases that are not a routine part of a PA’s scope of work.
• Monitors therapies and provides continuity of care.
• Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems.
• Responds to emergencies including use of CPR.
• Return patient phone calls back in a timely manner.
• Documents patient information and care in medical record, in confidential manner, and may maintain departmental statistical database for research purposes.
• Demonstrates knowledge of medical model and roles of physicians and physician assistants
• Performs all other related duties as assigned

Education & Experience Requirements

Nurse Practitioner:

• Master’s Degree in Nursing from an accredited school.
• Current NYS license to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
• Current NYS certification as a Nurse Practitioner (either Adult/Geriatric).
• Maintains a current collaborative practice agreement.
• Current National Certification
• Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Proficiency in all procedures, techniques and skills approved in the delineation of privileges

Physician Assistant:

• Current New York State Licensed Physician Assistant
• Current National Certification
• Current White Plains Hospital Physician Assistant DOP
• Master’s degree from an accredited school
• Certified in Basic Life Support (BLS) (recommended)
• Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) (required)

Proficiency in all procedures, techniques and skills approved in the delineation of privileges.

Managerial and/or leadership experience preferred.

5+ years of clinical experience required

Essential Physical Requirements

• Involves standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, twisting and lifting.
• May require transferring patients.
• May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.

• Must have ability to communicate verbally with patients, relatives, attending physicians and with nurses and other hospital personnel
