About This Position
The Transfer Machine Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of an asphalt material transfer vehicle (MTV) to shuttle and deliver hot mix asphalt (HMA) from haul trucks to the paver. This role ensures continuous paving operations, improves mat quality, and helps prevent material segregation by maintaining a consistent flow of asphalt to the paver. The Transfer Machine Operator works closely with the paving crew to ensure timely delivery and smooth paving operations.
Key Duties & Responsibilities- Operate the transfer machine/MTV to receive, store, and transfer hot mix asphalt from haul trucks to the paver.
- Maintain a continuous supply of asphalt to the paver to prevent stoppages and improve mat quality.
- Monitor material flow, temperature, and consistency to meet project specifications.
- Communicate with the paver operator, truck drivers, and foreman to coordinate material delivery.
- Perform daily pre-operational and post-operational inspections of the machine.
- Conduct routine maintenance such as greasing, checking fluids, and cleaning the transfer machine.
- Operate equipment safely around crew members and other machinery.
- Follow all company safety policies and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Assist with other labor or equipment operation duties when the transfer machine is not in use.
Qualifications & Requirements- Minimum 1 year of experience operating a material transfer vehicle or similar heavy equipment in paving operations.
- Knowledge of asphalt paving processes, including material handling and quality control.
- Ability to understand and follow project specifications and production schedules.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work as part of a team.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and dust.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform tasks involving bending, kneeling, and climbing.
- Work in high-noise environments and around heavy equipment.
Ability to work long or irregular hours, including nights and weekends, as required by project schedules.
