Overview
The successful candidate will provide radiological oversight and technical direction to work conducted at the Groton Shipyard and Nuclear Regional Maintenance Department (NRMD) at the New London SUBASE. They will collaborate daily with Nuclear Operations, Nuclear Test, Audit & Assessment, Radiological Controls personnel, Nuclear Engineering as well as other Naval Nuclear Propulsion Plant activities, local customer representatives (NRRO, RPCO, SUPSHIP), Squadron and Ship's Force.
Duties & Responbsibilities include:
- Preparation and completion of radioactive shipments in accordance with the Department of Transportation (DOT) Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations and International Air Transport Association (IATA) regulations
- Receipt of radioactive material shipments in accordance with DOT regulations
- Interaction with outside contractors and agencies regarding regulations and waste disposal requirements
- Confirmation of compliance with the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), The Toxic Substance Control Acti (TSCA), and the Clean Air Act with regards to waste disposition, storage, and disposal
- Adherence to and enforcement of Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program (NNPP) standards and requirments for radioactive material/ waste shipnts and other radiological work
- Coordination with other departments and NNPP shipyards to maintain and improve corporate radiological controls procedures, promote innovation, and implement process improvement initiatives
- Compliance with procedures and retention of records
- Development and review of methods and procedures to ensure radiological controls adhere to established NNPP principles
- Preparation of radiological controls agreements, maintenance of the radiological status of ships or facilities, and assistance in the development of exposure estimates and shielding goals
- Investigation, prevention, and mitigation of radiological problems
As an employee, the following successful qualifications are required:
- Radiological Engineer and Radiation Worker in accordance with NAVSEA 389-0288
- Shipper of radioactive material in accordance with 49 CFR DOT
- Mixed Waste Designator
Responsibilities
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to work effectively with engineering, management, and trades personnel
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment as both a leader and contributor
- Ability to be self-directed and self-critical
Qualifications
Required
- High School Diploma or GED
- Minimum 5 years of directly related technical experience
- Able to obtain and maintain full secret clearance with allowance for interim secret clearance prior to job start date
Preferred:
- DOT hazardous and / or radioactive materials shipping certification
- Prior experience interfacing with engineering, operations, program management and customer representatives (Navy personnel, Naval Reactors, KAPL, etc.)
- BS Degree or higher within Engineering discipline or equivilent technical degree
