About This Position
Reports to the Director of Security. Responsible for planning, organizing, directing, and overseeing the activities of the Officers in charge and Security Officers.

Overall coordinating of operational and staffing support functions of the Security Department by:
- Providing oversight for all Security Officers in charge and Security Officers.
- Provide input to the Security Director in interviewing, recommending, and selecting new associates; and coordinating new associate orientation.
- Assist Director in preparing associate performance appraisals.
- Assisting with employee relation matters such as corrective actions and progressive discipline.
- Providing leadership and skill development to assigned associates. Ensuring each officer is properly trained to perform assigned duties. Acts as a resource to associates on operational issues.
- Overseeing preparation of work, holiday, and vacation schedules for officers, ensuring adequate staffing and appropriate workloads.
- Overseeing, maintaining, and tracking use of departmental equipment to assure that officers are properly equipped and trained to respond to identified and anticipated risks.
- Working with contractors and service providers to recommend capital and operating purchases, monitor equipment uptime, associate training on use of equipment and to assure high levels of performance.
Provides input to the Security Director in administrative and daily operational functions to ensure a smooth functioning department by:
- Conducting and overseeing security personnel in periodic inspection tours of hospital premises to detect unsafe conditions.
- Participating in continuous quality improvement by identifying areas of opportunity and initiating the necessary actions.
Assists with organizational and departmental planning functions by:
- Assisting in development of departmental and Security Officer/Officer in charge goals and objectives as well as monitoring and reporting on metrics.
- Provides input to the Security Director in developing policies and procedures to address specific departmental functions.
- Assist with organizational and departmental training functions based on identified needs.
- Surveying hospital associates and management on a regular basis to determine service needs.
Provides the seamless operation of the department in order to promote ongoing effective customer service by:
- Responding to customer concerns and/or complaints. Assuring that customers are treated in a friendly, highly effective manner, while providing timely resolution of customer service matters.
- Overseeing investigations involving loss and theft cases and injury to associates or visitors.
Maintains professional growth and development by:
- Attending in-services, department meetings, participating in continuing education and attending conferences as approved.
- Maintaining professional affiliations as appropriate.
- Reading current professional journals and literature.
- Participating on Elkhart General Hospital committees as requested.
- Performing other duties as assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies, and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR), and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The level of knowledge, skills and abilities listed below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a bachelor's degree in law enforcement or related field from an accredited school. Five or more years of leadership experience in healthcare safety/security or a similar field is preferred. A minimum of two years of related security/law enforcement experience is required.

- Demonstrates strong leadership and organizational skills necessary to work effectively with day-to-day problems. Requires ability to analyze situations and respond in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates a high level of negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with a diverse group of people in a professional, courteous, friendly, and sincere manner.

- Requires current license to carry a handgun in the State of Michigan or reciprocal state or currently employed as a Law Enforcement Officer in the state of Michigan.
- Requires the successful completion of an initial basic firearms safety and training course, followed by a minimum frequency of an annual handgun proficiency qualifications course.
- Requires knowledge of general surveillance techniques and closed-circuit television; the "rights" of citizens regarding search, seizure, investigations, and detention.
- Requires maintenance of a valid driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.
- Requires the physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position.

- Specialized training and knowledge will reduce the potential for injury when resolving disturbances and responding to alarms.
