Job Title: Summer Intern (9 weeks)
Department: Adult Services
Supervises: No supervisory responsibility
Reports To: Head of Adult Services

Primary Accountability

Under the guidance of the Head of Adult Services, this position is designed to introduce a broad array of library skills and services to an individual with an interest in pursuing a career in libraries. This is a nine-week paid internship and part of the Next Chapter Library Internship program across the State of Michigan.

Training will consist of the following areas

Adult Services

Reference services - assisting patrons utilizing library resourcesCollection development – selecting materials for purchase and managing existing collectionProgramming – planning and executing library programs for the general public

Local History Archive

Preservation – digitizing historical materials to be catalogedCataloging – creating descriptive records for archival materials

Outreach ServicesThe intern will learn about providing library services to special populations

Youth Services

Technical Services

Circulation – managing the checkout and return process of library materialsProcessing – receiving new materials and preparing them for circulation

Special Project

The intern will pursue a library project of special interest; this could include but is not limited to advocacy, digital collections, intellectual freedom, reading education, etc.

Special Events

The intern will be required to attend a kickoff and closing event with their Next Chapter Library Internship cohort at the Clinton-Macomb Public Library and The Library of Michigan respectively.

Technical Skills:

Demonstrate general knowledge of computer use and Microsoft office softwareWilling to learn about library software and technology

Communication Skills:

Able to exercise tact and diplomacy in the resolution of mild conflicts or disagreements that occur on the job that would be considered at a level of basic “customer service.”Prepares effectively written communication (e.g. correspondence, memos, letters, emails) conveying information.Effectively communicates information during informal and formal verbal presentations.

Physical Demands:

Ability to lift, push, pull or carry up to 50 poundsAbility to use a step stool to reach higher shelves as necessaryStanding or sitting for periods of timeWriting or typing to complete work-related documents
