About This Position
Under general direction, Police Officers serve the City of North Liberty by providing law enforcement services that protect life and property, prevent crime, and maintain public order. The position supports the city’s mission to strengthen public safety through community partnership and fair enforcement of the law. Police Officers perform patrol duties, respond to emergencies, investigate incidents, and contribute to the overall safety and well-being of the community.
A college degree is preferred, along with previous experience in law enforcement or a related field. Candidates must demonstrate the ability to acquire, within the probationary period, knowledge of criminal law, investigative techniques, crime prevention methods, rules of evidence, and legal procedures related to the custody of individuals. An understanding of police records systems and the operational capabilities and limitations of departmental units is also required. Applicants should possess strong analytical skills to assess law enforcement situations and adapt appropriately, as well as the ability to plan, coordinate, and collaborate with other officers and agencies. Proficiency in preparing accurate and comprehensive reports is essential, along with the ability to operate a motor vehicle safely and efficiently.
Licenses and Certifications
Must possess a valid Iowa driver’s license, be certified through the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy (or be able to obtain certification), and maintain firearm certification in compliance with all applicable state and federal laws.
Physical, Mental, & Environmental Requirements
This position requires physical strength and endurance to perform tasks such as bending, running, lifting, crawling into confined spaces, and restraining individuals when necessary. Officers must be able to maintain focus and readiness throughout 12-hour shifts, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.
The role involves frequent exposure to potentially dangerous individuals, high-stress situations, and varying environmental conditions, including seasonal weather, hazardous materials, bodily fluids, and communicable diseases. Functional literacy in both written and spoken English is essential for report writing, clear communication, and effective interaction with the public and team members.
- Patrol assigned areas to enforce laws, investigate suspicious activity, and prevent crime.
- Respond to crime scenes, emergencies, and accidents to assist the public and provide law enforcement services.
- Inform supervisors of complex or unusual situations; request assistance as needed.
- Participate in investigations involving violations of local, state, and federal laws.
- Receive and assess complaints or emergency reports to determine appropriate police response.
- Understand and adhere to Departmental Policies; seek supervisory guidance when unsure of applicable policies or laws. If a North Liberty supervisor is unavailable, contact the on-duty supervisor from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office or Coralville Police Department.
- Assist with department training initiatives and policy development.
- Conduct interviews with witnesses and suspects; collect, document, and preserve evidence; apprehend and arrest violators; prepare necessary legal documents and correspondence; testify in court proceedings.
- Attend required training sessions and departmental meetings.
- Accurately document shift activities and work hours.
- Perform additional duties or specialized tasks as assigned by the Chief of Police or Sergeant.
- Maintain positive, professional relationships with the public, fellow officers, and partner agencies.
- Performs related duties as assigned to meet the operational needs of the department.
