About This Position
POSITION SUMMARY
The Sports Specialist is responsible for performing a variety of sports and recreational activities and games for the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids. This role supports the successful delivery of sports programming by leading classes and activities, monitoring programs to ensure safety and engagement, and assisting with operational needs such as running scoreboards, and providing outstanding member service. The Sports Specialist ensures a safe, inclusive, and fun environment where members and program participants can interact, develop skills, and enjoy physical activity.
This position requires active, face-to-face leadership within programs and weeknight availability, beginning around 4:30 PM. Additional scheduling will be based on program schedules.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Teaches specific sports skills and runs classes
- Maintains supervision of participants and members
- Enforces YMCA safety standards
- Follows emergency procedures as needed
- Sets up and takes down equipment
- Monitors the use of the facilities and program areas
- Runs scoreboards and assists with program operations
- Distributes participant information as needed
- Maintains all areas in clean, presentable fashion
- Supports the Sports Director in addressing member/parent complaints
Performs any other functions necessary for the smooth and efficient operation of the YMCA of Greater Grand Rapids
COMPENSATION
$14.35 - $17.93 ; Part-Time, Non Exempt (up to 25 hours per week)

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: No educational requirements
- Experience: A minimum of 6 months of athletic experience or participation in structured sports programming. Experience working with youth preferred
- Proven Expertise: Excellent customer service and communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Mission-Driven Leadership: Strong leadership skills required. Ability to interact with people of all ethnic backgrounds, ages and lifestyles.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATION
- Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) within the first 60 days
- AED-Oxygen Certification required within the first 60 days
- First Aid Certification required within the first 60 days
- Blood Borne Pathogen training
- State of Michigan criminal background clearance (ICHAT)
