DEPUTY FIRE MARSHAL

PROMOTIONAL ANNOUNCEMENT
**Open to Saginaw Fire Department Employees Only**
PURPOSE: The Eligible List resulting from this examination will be used to fill any Deputy Fire Marshal vacancy. The Deputy Fire Marshal is an administrative position that assists with fire prevention activities conducted by the Fire Department. This includes community education, fire code inspections, code enforcement, and fire investigations.
REQUIREMENTS: Must have served on the Saginaw Fire Department for at least one (1) year and successfully completed the probationary firefighter period on or before November 12, 2025.
EXAMINATION: The examination will consist of the following:
- Written Examination - 70%
- Oral Examination - 10%
- Personal Qualifications Rating - 20%
***Scores of the Written Examination will not be distributed until the Eligibility List is completed***
ORAL EXAMINATION: To be held on TBD (on or after 11/12/2025)
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Candidates wishing to compete for this position shall complete an application and submit a resume and cover letter on the NEOGov Portal [https://www.governmentjobs.com/careers/saginawmi]. Deadline to apply is October 29, 2025 at 1600 hours.
- Assists the Fire Marshal as it relates to fire prevention and community education activities
- Completes inspection reports and ensures timely follow-up inspections, disposition of violations, and accurate record keeping and storage while utilizing the Fire Department records management system.
- Prepares technical reports, news releases, public safety programs, and local ordinances relating to fire prevention and education, as directed.
- Meets with and assists architects, engineers, contractors and others involved in development and construction activities where fire codes, ordinances or standards may affect such activities.
- Coordinates inspections with inspectors from the City of Saginaw's Inspection Division.
- Assists with fire investigations cause and origin determination.
- Attends regional and state meetings of related agencies, and other relevant meetings/conferences to maintain current knowledge of regional affairs, with impact to fire prevention activities. Stays current with code interpretations, fire investigation and public education programs/techniques.
- Performs all other related duties or tasks as assigned by the Fire Marshal.
- Subject to callback.
- Must have served on the department as a Firefighter for at least one (1) year and successfully completed the probationary firefighter period.
- Must possess and maintain a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
- Must have knowledge of all Fire Department SOP's and rules and regulations, as well as City policies and ordinances that pertain to the Fire Department.
- Must be in good physical health and be able to pass an NFPA 1582 medical examination annually.
- Must have the ability to complete the requirements for NFPA Fire Inspector I within six (6) months of promotion.
- Must complete Fire Investigator training (80 hours) through the Michigan State Police or National Fire Academy, must be obtained within six (6) months of promotion.
Deputy Fire Marshal Application Process – Personal Qualifications Rating (PQR)
The Deputy Fire Marshal selection process includes three components: a written exam, an oral interview, and a Personal Qualifications Rating (PQR), which accounts for 20% of your total score.
To accurately assess your PQR, you must submit a written resume with your application. Your resume should clearly detail your experience and qualifications and be accompanied by all relevant documentation. Acceptable documentation includes, but is not limited to:
- Fire Officer Certification
- Fire Prevention Training
- Fire Investigator Training
- Experience
- College Credit
- Additional fire-related training
