About This Position
Position Overview
The Deck Manager is responsible for always ensuring the safety of swimmers and members in the pool and surrounding pool area. The Deck Manager oversee the activities, maintenance, and daily pool operation of the ECC Pool in the absence of the Pool Director. Deck Managers participate in pool activities and ensure that members and guests are following pool procedures. They strive to create a welcoming, safe recreation area for members, guests, and staff. Deck Managers are responsible for assisting Pool Director in all facets of developing, managing, promoting, and coordinating comprehensive pool activities for members and guests of the Club.
Key Responsibilities
- In charge of daily operation and management of the swimming pool in absence of Pool Director.
- Assists the Pool Director and Director of Athletics in coordinating all aquatic programs such as swim lesson registration, recreation swimming, swim lessons, and adult lap swim. Leads and performs aquatics activities such as swim instruction, lifeguarding and member service. Maintains pool records and prepares reports and memos regarding pool activities as needed.
- Instructs all levels of swim lessons.
- Maintains good member and guest relations.
- Keeps Pool Director and Director of Athletics aware of maintenance conditions and supply needs.
- Makes every reasonable effort to continually improve the way the job is performed and increase the quality of service to members and guests.
- Assists in recruiting and staffing of qualified pool staff as per Pool Director.
- Assists in coaching staff for exemplary performance as per Pool Director.
- Oversees pool staff schedules and problem-solving as needed as per Pool Director.
- Assists in monitoring safety and hygiene standards as recommended by the local health department and American Red Cross.
- Assists in training, orienting, and counselling pool staff as to their responsibilities in the pool area.
- Assists in training lifeguards and other pool staff in the basic water safety standards and out-of-water rescue techniques.
- Assists in monitoring the maintenance of safety and sanitation standards, conducting regular checks, and ensuring logbooks are properly kept.
- Monitors the use of equipment and supplies. Identifies maintenance issues and reports them to the Pool Director or Director of Athletics.
- Communicates with appropriate pool staff and/or parents as necessary regarding individual youth’s performance and/or special needs.
- Ensures pool is cleaned appropriately.
- Ensures programs are in place at the Club to service the entire membership (juniors, adults, seniors, etc.)
- Enforces all the club’s/facilities rules and regulations governing the use of the facility, its equipment and other property.
- Represents the Club at swimming and diving activities (with other Clubs), including swimming and diving meets.
- Inspects pool and related facility daily prior to the opening of the pool and ascertains that all necessary maintenance has been performed.
- Maintains appropriate swimming and diving certifications including any lifesaving certification, CPR and American Red Cross.
- Receives and responds to member and guest complaints and suggestions.
- Attends and participates in team, departmental, and Club meetings as requested.
- Maintains a professional appearance appropriate to position and as per Club policy.
Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Two (2) years in related field(s)
- High school diploma/G.E.D
- American Red Cross CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, American Red Cross Lifeguarding & American Red Cross First Aid
- Previous experience in lifeguarding and teaching swimming activities; supervisory or management experience, preferably in aquatic settings.
- Knowledge of pool operations, maintenance, sanitation, safety practices, first aid, CPR, and instructional aquatic activities.
- Ability to lead, schedule, coordinate, and train staff; evaluate lifeguard skills; and provide instruction to youth and staff.
- Strong communication skills, including enforcing safety regulations, emergency procedures, and providing guidance.
- Ability to prioritize, manage multiple projects, solve problems, make decisions, and work independently in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to customer service and fostering cooperative relationships.

- Majority of time is spent outdoors, with exposure to varying weather conditions, including high sun exposure.
- Tasks involve regular physical activity such as climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and may include lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling objects weighing 20–50 pounds.
- Requires visual, auditory, and communication abilities, including depth perception and the ability to identify and respond to pool-related hazards.
- Exposure to environmental conditions such as dirt, dust, moisture, chemicals, and temperature extremes may occur.
- Ability to observe behavior, enforce safety rules, respond to emergencies, and maintain professionalism in accordance with Club standards.
- Ability to climb ladders or step stools, and perform tasks requiring bending, leaning, stooping, and fine motor skills.
