Butterfly House Monitor

Availability: May – October. Part-time, 20-30 hours per week with evening and weekend availability required to support the department and organizational needs.
General Summary:
Enhance visitor experience in the Purdy Butterfly House through excellent customer service, information sharing, enthusiasm for its mission, and assisting with operational needs. Ensure guests follow all guidelines to prioritize safety for all visitors and butterflies.
Essential Duties:
- Monitor guest interaction with the Butterfly House exhibits including but not limited to reminding guests of butterfly house guidelines and helping to educate guests on the butterfly life cycle, and their role in our ecosystem while connecting people to plants.
- Perform daily operational support duties including but not limited to sweeping, sanitizing touch points, inspecting screens for damage, filling butterfly feeding stations, and monitoring the safety of the Purdy Butterfly House and lobby.
- Assist with tasks required to maintain healthy and interesting plant displays. This includes watering, pest management, weeding, and monitoring host plants.
- Maintain communication with Horticulture Educator on any issues that arise affecting the Purdy Butterfly House.
- Attend trainings as required and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Must be 16 years or older with a demonstrated interest in native butterflies and their role in the natural world. Excellent communication skills and the ability to engage and project enthusiasm about learning and nature to a diverse population in both regular attendance and group visitation.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
- Physical Demands: Requires frequent physical activity such as limited lifting (up to 30-lbs), bending, kneeling, crawling, stooping, squatting, and walking over uneven and sloping terrain. Sense of vision and hearing in the normal range with or without correction. Sense of touch and the ability to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) required.
- Work Environment: The position requires work outdoors and within the confines of the Purdy Butterfly House which is screened but continuously outdoors. While performing the duties of the job, the employee will be exposed to variable outdoor weather conditions and variable temperatures and humidity within the Butterfly House.
- Equipment: While performing the duties the employee may use lawn and garden hand tools such as, rakes, shovels, trowels, and other common hand tools and powered equipment such as electric blower. The position will require the use of two-way radio.
