Ocean State Media is the locally owned and operated award-winning public media organization serving Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. Formed through the merger of Rhode Island PBS and The Public’s Radio, Ocean State Media was established to deliver trusted local journalism and deepen community connection.

About the RoleThe Community producer will play a central role in elevating the voices, experiences and ideas of our community across all platforms. Community engagement journalism is core to our mission and this position will help ensure our reporting and storytelling remains deeply connected to the people we serve.
This role blends journalism, community engagement, and multiplatform content creation. The community producer will work directly with residents, partners, and organizations throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts to surface stories, convene conversations, and translate community perspectives into compelling digital, audio, and video content.
The ideal candidate will have a background in community engagement, and, ideally, multilingual fluency.
Working with our News and Education & Events teams to amplify community voices in our coverage, the community producer will engage community partners, including schools, universities, libraries, arts organizations, local community groups and individuals, to produce multiplatform stories and programs and events for broadcast and digital platforms.
What You’ll DoCommunity-centered journalism & engagement
Convene listening sessions, conversations and community gatherings to understand what matters most to local communities, and ensure that insight is reflected in our journalism.
Generate news and digital/social content built around the voices of community members.
Help Ocean State media build and maintain relationships and trust with residents, organizations, local partners and communities around the region.
In collaboration with the Education & Events team, lead OSM newsroom participation in community events hosted by other organizations.
Explore and implement strategies for amplifying the voices of community leaders, content creators, activists and others from around the state.
Produce and curate social media content across relevant channels (e.g., Facebook, Instagram, X/Twitter, LinkedIn, TikTok) based on community engagement activity.
Monitor local social media trends to identify opportunities for partnerships with community content creators.
Collaborate with editorial & multimedia teams to repurpose content and amplify reach.
Work toward audience growth goals (follower/subscriber growth, engagement rate, new members/supporters) in partnership with the Director of Digital and Audience.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Digital & Audience to support the organization’s audience engagement efforts.
Required:
Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Marketing, Digital Media or related field (or equivalent experience).
3–5 years of experience in journalism, community engagement, or multiplatform content creation.
Strong writing and storytelling skills across formats.
Experience curating and/or creating social content across multiple platforms, and using analytics to optimize.
Excellent organizational, project-management and multitasking abilities, able to manage calendars and deadlines across channels.
Collaborative team player with strong interpersonal skills; comfortable working across editorial, design, tech, and marketing teams.
Familiar with digital best practices (accessibility, deliverability, privacy compliance) and social media trends.
Ability to adapt to a fast-changing environment, learn new tools/platforms and take initiative to make new things.
Preferred:
Experience in a media/non-profit/public media or journalism environment.
Fluency in a language other than English
Audio and/or video editing proficiency
