IBMi Systems Architect

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for an IBMi Systems Architect based in Canada.

This is a senior technical leadership role responsible for shaping, modernizing, and governing a large-scale IBMi ecosystem that supports critical retail operations across the country. You will drive architectural direction, ensuring systems are optimized for performance, scalability, and security while aligning with modern IBMi best practices. The role combines hands-on expertise with strategic planning, including long-term platform evolution and modernization initiatives. You will play a key role in defining engineering standards, improving operational resilience, and enhancing system reliability. Working in a fully remote setup with occasional onsite collaboration, you will guide a team of engineers while fostering knowledge sharing and technical excellence. This position also emphasizes innovation through automation and AI-driven tooling to streamline IBMi operations and reduce manual workload.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead the design and implementation of IBMi modernization strategies across applications, databases, security, and system administration, ensuring alignment with best practices and optimal performance.
  • Define and maintain engineering standards, documentation practices, and performance guidelines for production applications and databases across IBMi teams.
  • Develop and execute a long-term (5-year) roadmap for IBMi system improvements, including architecture, security, administration, and database evolution.
  • Provide technical leadership for issue management, including prioritization, escalation, resolution, and communication across IBMi and integrated platforms.
  • Design and support onboarding and training programs, while mentoring systems engineering teams and continuously improving technical documentation.
  • Establish and oversee IBMi backup, recovery, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions, ensuring annual testing and operational readiness.
  • Drive the adoption of AI and automation strategies to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual effort within IBMi environments.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field.
  • 10+ years of IBMi software development experience (RPG/RPGLE, CL, ILE components, free-format RPG, SQL, embedded SQL, APIs, DDL, data queues, triggers, service programs, and more).
  • 5+ years of experience in IBMi application architecture and customization, ideally within JDA MMS environments.
  • 5+ years of IBMi systems and security administration experience in large-scale, high-availability environments.
  • Strong expertise in IBMi operating systems, hardware, performance tuning, and database optimization.
  • Experience implementing DR/BCP strategies including PowerHA and iASP configurations.
  • Proficiency with modern IBMi tooling such as VS Code, Git, ACS, Navigator for i, ARCAD, and IBM tools.
  • Proven leadership experience managing technical teams, onboarding engineers, and enforcing engineering standards.
  • Strong understanding of AI tools and their application in system management and development workflows.
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and stakeholder management skills with the ability to operate under pressure.
Benefits:
  • Competitive salary range: $107,600 – $157,600 annually.
  • Short-Term Incentive Plan: up to 15% annual bonus based on performance.
  • Management Profit Sharing Plan (MPSP): up to 15% annual contribution.
  • Company-funded retirement savings support.
• Comprehensive health and dental benefits with cost-sharing options.
  • Paid time off including vacation, personal days, and additional holiday closure between Christmas and New Year’s.
  • Career development opportunities, coaching, and internal growth pathways.
  • Additional perks including employee store discounts, parental leave top-up, recognition rewards, and a strong safety-first culture.
  • Fully remote work arrangement with occasional onsite collaboration in Ottawa.
