Job Description

Why Join MEC

At MEC, our purpose is to equip people for a lifetime of great outdoor experiences and adventure. Our home is on the trail—and everything we do is grounded in a deep belief in the power of the outdoors to build confidence, connection, and community.

What sets MEC apart is our deep expertise, thoughtful product curation, and strong community connection, all focused on serving our members. Our teams bring lived outdoor experience and product knowledge to every interaction, helping members find the right gear and guidance for where they're going next. We curate products with intention—prioritizing quality, performance, and sustainability—so members can trust what they buy and how it's made. And we show up in our communities through local partnerships, events, and shared outdoor experiences that extend far beyond our store walls.

We're a people-first organization, grounded in our values of respect, integrity, inclusivity, collaboration, and accountability. Our leaders play a hands-on role in bringing these values and differentiators to life—building strong teams, leading with care and clarity, and ensuring every decision supports meaningful experiences for our members, our staff, and the places we love to explore.

The Opportunity

As the Manager, Facilities & Building Services, you are a key support leader accountable for ensuring the physical environment and infrastructure of the Vancouver store and Support Office operates safely, efficiently, and attractively. This role acts as the bridge between the retail store front line, store management, and the Support Office Facilities team.

Reporting to the General Manager, you support routine maintenance, coordinate with external contractors, complete general upkeep and repairs, ensure workplace health and safety compliance, and support the physical logistics that impact daily retail staff and members. You adapt to the fast-paced retail environment by pivoting focus and project scope to respond to immediate business needs.

What You'll Be Responsible For

Facilities Maintenance & Repairs

  • Report, receive, track, and action all repair and maintenance requests for the Vancouver store and Support Office building, in collaboration with store management and the Support Office Facilities team
  • Support programmed building maintenance from contracted vendors, ensuring work is completed to a high standard and in a timely manner
  • Conduct daily or weekly walkthroughs of the building and grounds to check for facility hazards, maintenance issues, and security concerns
  • Monitor building condition and execute basic fixes (e.g., changing lightbulbs, power washing, patching/painting drywall), escalating larger concerns to and collaborating on solutions with the Facilities team

Store Cleanliness & Place of Pride

  • Spearhead store cleanliness standards that go beyond the scope of contracted cleaning vendors, proactively identifying and closing gaps so the store consistently presents at its best
  • Champion a culture of pride of place among store staff, engaging teams to take ownership of their spaces and reinforcing that a clean, well-kept environment is everyone's responsibility
  • Conduct regular cleanliness walkthroughs of high-traffic and high-visibility areas, addressing issues in real time and setting the standard for what "member-ready" looks like
  • Partner with store leadership to build cleanliness into daily routines and team habits, ensuring the store's presentation reflects positively on the member experience and the MEC brand

Vendor, Tenant & Budget Coordination

  • Liaise with vendors and the Facilities team when issues or additional maintenance needs arise
  • Respond to service calls and maintenance requests from building tenants, ensuring a professional and timely resolution
  • Monitor and adhere to the facilities budget in collaboration with the store operations team and Support Office Facilities team, ensuring service contracts are cost-effective and reviewing utility or repair expenditures

Operations, Health & Safety

  • Partner with the store operations team to identify operational gaps related to the built environment and support with solutions, repairs, or process changes
  • Support the store operations team and JHSC in upholding health & safety standards according to company policy, ensuring compliance with provincial regulations, fire codes, and local municipal bylaws
  • Monitor the effectiveness of building security systems, conduct regular security patrols, and address and de-escalate aggressive behaviour, coordinating with local law enforcement if necessary
  • Play an active role in building sustainability initiatives
What You Bring
  • Proficient knowledge of building systems and basic knowledge of hand/power tools, with the ability to lift 22.7 kg (50 lbs)
  • A hard-working attitude - you deliver on what you commit to, even when no one is watching, and you genuinely like helping people
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work cross-functionally across multiple teams
  • Ability to problem-solve, manage conflict, and build relationships with stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Team-oriented work ethic with the ability to work autonomously to complete deliverables
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and projects at the same time while keeping your cool
  • Savviness with Windows, Excel, Word, Outlook, and D365
  • First Aid Certification is an asset
  • Flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required
Work Environment

This is an active, hands-on role requiring regular presence throughout the Vancouver store and Support Office areas, maintaining the building and its infrastructure. The role includes standing, walking, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and navigating varied building environments while supporting store operations, tenants, and staff.

Our Commitment to Inclusion

MEC is an equal opportunity employer committed to building an inclusive, respectful, and barrier-free workplace. We value diversity and believe our teams are stronger when everyone feels safe, supported, and able to be themselves at work.

Compensation:

Salary range is $60,000 to $75,000 dependent on skills and experience.
