POSITION SUMMARY

The IR Specialist is responsible for the execution of all IR inspection activities on assigned projects including, but not limited to, evaluations of building envelopes, roofing systems, electrical systems, mechanical systems, underground utilities, concrete structures, renewable energy systems, and other construction components requiring thermal evaluation.

The IR Specialist will report to assigned jobsites and integrate with the operational management of each project with a focus on enhancing safety, improving quality, reducing project risk, supporting schedule certainty, and verifying adherence to design intent. The IR Specialist will directly report to and receive operational support, technical direction, inspection procedures, and career development from their respective Infrared Thermography Manager.

The IR Specialist is responsible for ensuring the accuracy, consistency, and quality of all IR inspections, analysis, documentation, and reporting. Through proactive identification of thermal anomalies and verification of construction quality, the IR Specialist is instrumental to the overall success of the projects they support, helping Operations make informed decisions that improve quality, reduce rework, and mitigate construction risk.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety & Quality

  • Maintain an uncompromising commitment to Safety throughout all field activities.
  • Ensure adherence to all McCarthy Safety Guidelines and project-specific safety requirements.
  • Adhere to all QA/QC processes and procedures to ensure the accuracy, consistency, and quality of all IR inspections, analysis, and deliverables.
  • Verify construction quality through non-destructive IR evaluations that identify deficiencies before they impact project performance.
  • Maintain and properly care for IR cameras, supporting equipment, and associated inspection tools.
  • Ensure inspection data is collected, documented, and stored in accordance with established company standards.

Operations

  • Perform IR inspections of building envelopes, roofing systems, electrical systems, mechanical systems, underground utilities, concrete structures, renewable energy systems, and other construction components.
  • Collect, analyze, and document thermal imaging data using established inspection procedures and industry best practices.
  • Identify, evaluate, and document thermal anomalies requiring further investigation or corrective action.
  • Prepare clear, concise, and accurate inspection reports that effectively communicate findings, observations, and supporting documentation.
  • Work directly with Operations teams to investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve issues identified during IR inspections.
  • Interpret construction drawings and project documentation to support inspection planning, execution, and reporting.
  • Coordinate with Design Management, Trade Partners, and Engineers of Record to validate findings and support issue resolution.
  • Support the overall site-specific quality program by providing accurate thermal inspection data that assists project teams in making informed construction decisions.
  • Work with the Infrared Thermography Manager and Operations Leadership to continuously improve inspection procedures, reporting standards, and field workflows.
  • Maintain inspection equipment, software, and supporting documentation to ensure operational readiness.
  • Participate in technical training, certification maintenance, and professional development opportunities.
  • Support the development of IR standards, best practices, and training materials to continuously improve McCarthy's IR program.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Current ASNT Level I Certification in Infrared Thermography
  • 2+ years of experience in the commercial construction industry.
  • Knowledge of IR imaging principles and thermal inspection best practices.
  • Experience reading and interpreting construction drawings and specifications.
  • Strong ability to communicate and integrate with Operations teams, Design Management, and project stakeholders.
  • Experience generating accurate inspection reports with properly documented findings and observations.
  • Developmentally minded with a focus on continuous improvement.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Bluebeam, and construction documentation software.
  • Willingness to travel nationwide as required.
  • Ability to safely access active construction environments, including rooftops, elevated work areas, and uneven terrain while carrying inspection equipment.
