Job Description

Riggs CAT

Description:

Riggs Cat Power & Energy is hiring Field Technicians at two levels. PM/Test Techs perform preventive maintenance, load bank testing, and inspections on generator sets and switchgear. Oil & Gas / Industrial Techs diagnose, overhaul, and maintain gas and diesel industrial engines in oil & gas compression and power applications, from the G3600 and G3500 down to C9 and 3300-series, including frac pump engines.

Level 1 is the operational backbone that keeps commissioned power systems running, pairing electric power fundamentals with disciplined, hands-on PM and testing. Level 2 is our deepest mechanical and engine specialization in the field and the technical backbone of our Oil & Gas (Power) fleets. At both levels you work on running equipment at client sites.

Levels and responsibilities

Level 1: PM/Test Tech

Typical background: Experience maintaining generator sets, switchgear, or similar critical power equipment

  • Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on generator sets and switchgear using standard checklists
  • Set up and run load bank tests, building your skill at interpreting results on the job
  • Service automatic transfer switches, building troubleshooting skill on the job
  • Work on low- and medium-voltage switchgear, learning startup procedures on the job
  • Work with EMCP generator control panels at a basic level
  • Diagnose issues found during PM and document findings clearly for clients and internal tracking

Level 2: Oil & Gas / Industrial Tech

Typical background: Prior diesel or gas engine mechanic experience in heavy equipment, industrial engines, or oilfield engines, with hands-on teardown and rebuild experience

  • Diagnose and troubleshoot gas and diesel engines, including air/fuel ratio tuning, ignition systems, and lean burn, stoichiometric, and low-emission natural gas configurations
  • Service electronically controlled (ADEM and other ECM-based) and mechanically controlled engines, from 3600-series down to C9 and 3300-series
  • Perform top-end and major overhauls, including cylinder head, crankshaft/camshaft, and common rail fuel system work
  • Support G3600 and G3500 application, installation, and performance work
  • Use Applied Failure Analysis (visual exam, wear patterns, fracture analysis) to set the repair plan
  • Follow a structured diagnostic method, such as the Caterpillar 7-Step Diagnostic Process or an equivalent OEM method
Requirements:

What you bring

Level 1: PM/Test Tech

Required:

Level 2: Oil & Gas / Industrial Tech

Required:

  • Prior diesel or gas engine mechanic experience in heavy equipment, industrial engines, or oilfield engines
  • Hands-on teardown and rebuild experience with precision measurement tools
  • Willingness to travel for periodic training and in-territory field work
  • Basic electrical aptitude is a plus, but not the focus of this level

Nice to have:

  • Experience on large-bore gas or diesel engines (Cat G3600, G3500, 3500 series, or comparable engines from other manufacturers)
