Job Description
Manages automated equipment project execution for one or more projects that contain high automation equipment complexity for both new and existing sites. Works within a business unit across multiple sites and significant travel to sites is required. Project management includes: developing equipment project plans, developing equipment and software functional detailed designs, developing equipment test and acceptance planning, communication of project status to leadership, interfacing with other DHL functional groups. Typical projects include conveyors, case sorters, shuttle systems, unit sorting, print and apply, and warehouse control systems.
Responsibilities
- Provides leadership and expert guidance to operations and solution design teams regarding types of automated equipment, targeted equipment rates, productivity, cost, and layout.
- Provides equipment and process engineering expertise and leadership at new distribution centers where automated material handling equipment from one or more vendors is being implemented.
- Responsible for leading work streams related to the deployment of highly-automated material handling systems.
- Manages the automated equipment vendors to ensure that equipment and software meet the required schedule, functionality, rate, and quality in the as contracted requirements. Leads automated equipment testing across multiple project phases.
- Areas of responsibility include: data analysis, business case creation, equipment cost estimating, equipment layout, equipment evaluation, process productivity modeling and estimates, vendor management, project management, equipment punch-listing, warehouse control system software integration and testing, equipment flow control design, equipment functionality and rate testing, operations start up training, query and report development.
- Leads a small team of on-site process and equipment support engineers at each project site.
- Provides leadership and training to these support engineers to grow their talent and expertise at running and supporting the project site equipment.
- Supports the distribution center operations team in learning and optimizing the use of the automated equipment.
- Stays up to date on new distribution equipment technologies and best practices across sectors.
- Develops process and equipment solution options to meet customer requirements, improve productivity, reduce cycle time, decrease cost.
- Operates in matrix environment and is an effective partner with numerous other functional groups to deliver results to the customer.
- Selects and manages use of external vendors and contractors for engineering and maintenance-related projects.
- Maintains key stakeholder alignment through use of strong Project Management and Communication skills
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Training site engineering team to become experts on the installed equipment.
- Develops engineering talent on the automation engineering team
Required Education and Experience
- 9+ years of experience in relevant equipment implementation required.
- 5+ years of project management experience required.
- 2+ years of managing engineering direct reports required.
- 1+ years of financial reporting including capital projects preferred.
- Automated equipment business case development preferred.
- Prior experience implementing automated unit / case handling equipment required.
- Data analysis using excel, access, SQL, power BI required.
- MOST / MTM labor modeling required.
- PLC equipment control preferred.
- CAD for equipment layout required.
- Excellent verbal and written communication required.
- Project management required.
- Warehouse control systems (WCS) required.
- Warehouse management systems (WMS) required.
- Leadership and mentoring of a team required.
- Barcoding preferred.
- Great organizational skills required.
- Experience with new distribution center start-ups required.
