Description: The Assistant Superintendent of Golf Course Maintenance plays an integral role in ensuring the pristine condition and efficient operation of the historic Tam O ’Shanter Golf Course. Under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Golf Course Maintenance, the Assistant Superintendent is responsible for the daily oversight of maintenance activities, supervision of staff, and implementation of strategies to uphold the course’s renowned playing conditions.

Tasks:

  • Coordinate with crews to ensure the golf course is maintained to the highest standards.
  • Supervises work crews, monitors operations, and verifies the efficient and timely accomplishment of assigned duties.
  • Evaluates golf course conditions, monitors soil moisture levels and daily irrigation practices/schedules.
  • Inspects turf areas daily for fungus, insects, and undesirable vegetation.
  • Prepares and mixes chemicals for pesticide application.
  • Administers pesticides and fertilizers in accordance with the regulations set forth by Illinois State Law.
  • Maintains comprehensive records of all maintenance activities to reduce downtime and ensure optimal equipment functionality.
  • Assists in coordinating and executing all mowing operations across the golf course, actively participating in the mowing process to ensure tasks are completed efficiently.
  • Promotes and upholds safety protocols and regulations within the golf course maintenance team.
  • Remains informed on various aspects of golf course maintenance to provide support to the superintendent during their absence.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • Understanding of agronomy principles, soil science, turfgrass, and their maintenance requirements.
  • Two years working in golf maintenance required.
  • Knowledge of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides, including proper application techniques and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with irrigation systems, including maintenance, troubleshooting of sprinklers, pipes, and valves.
  • Understanding of environmental regulations and best practices for sustainability, water conservation, and habitat preservation on golf courses.
  • Proficiency in both English and Spanish
  • Proficiency in budget development and management, including cost analysis and resource allocation, to ensure efficient use of resources while maintaining quality standards.
  • Proficiency in operating golf course maintenance equipment, such as mowers, edgers, sprayers, and aerators.
  • Ability to lead and supervise a team, ensuring tasks are completed efficiently and properly.
  • Ability to identify issues related to turf health, irrigation and equipment, and make informed decisions to address them.
  • Willingness to stay current on industry trends, new technologies and best practices in golf course maintenance.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all stakeholders including golf course staff, patrons and management. Actively soliciting input and engagement to elevate services and cater to the preferences of golfers.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure that all aspects of the golf course meet quality standards and contribute to a high level of patron satisfaction.
  • Ability to work outdoors on uneven terrain, exposed to weather, such as hot or wet conditions.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects up to 50 lbs., maneuver equipment through uneven terrain, perform physical activities that require considerable use of arms and legs.
  • Ability to operate motorized equipment and use hand tools, which requires effective hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
  • Ability to evaluate information, assess risks, and anticipate potential issues, and make decisions.
  • Capacity to adapt to changing circumstances and priorities, adjusting maintenance strategies as needed to meet evolving community needs.
