Position Overview
The purpose of this position is to provide skilled surgical technical support to ensure surgical patients consistently receive the highest level of perioperative care. This role works closely with the veterinary surgical team to maintain smooth daily operations and uphold our standards of quality, safety, and surgical efficiency.
The Surgery Technician follows established aseptic protocols, assists with soft tissue and orthopedic procedures, manages anesthesia, and supports surgical training efforts by modeling proper sterile techniques and teamwork. Any questions, concerns, or unusual surgical or anesthetic situations are communicated to the Lead Surgery Technician to ensure timely resolution and continuous improvement in patient care.
What You’ll Do
- Obtain signed consent forms from pet owners, prepare medications and surgical supplies for same-day procedures, and assist with pre-operative and post-operative care
- Notify owners when surgery begins and ensure medications, including discharge prescriptions, are ready for patient discharges
- Continuously update surgical reports and maintain a sterile operating room environment
- Assist with anesthesia procedures and support anesthetists following established protocols
- Cross-train in anesthesia, radiology, and other departments to provide flexible support
- Operate the CT machine, assist with imaging, and ensure all surgical equipment, including scopes and instruments, is properly maintained, sterilized, and ready for use
- Adhere to safety protocols, infection control procedures, and regulatory standards
- Participate in ongoing training and assist in implementing anesthesia and surgical protocols
- Ensure all patient interactions, treatments, and procedures are accurately documented in compliance with hospital guidelines
- Participate in on-call shifts to cover emergency surgeries, ensuring flexibility and team support during urgent cases
- Accurately document all patient interactions, treatments, diagnostic results, and surgical procedures in the hospital's records system, ensuring comprehensive and up-to-date records
- Follow all safety protocols and regulatory requirements to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff, including maintaining infection control practices during surgeries
- Attend all department and hospital staff meetings
What We're Looking For
- 2+ years of experience as a surgery/anesthesia technician in a specialty hospital or high-volume surgical environment (VTS in Surgery or Anesthesia preferred/encouraged).
- Demonstrated proficiency in anesthetic induction, maintenance, monitoring, and surgical patient management.
- High proficiency in sterile technique, surgical pack preparation, and instrument care.
- Experience in fast-paced, multi-doctor environments.
- Familiarity with specialty services such as internal medicine, surgery, or critical care.
- Exceptional emotional control, empathy, and reliability under pressure.
- Demonstrates initiative and a growth-oriented mindset; pursues continuing education in emergency and critical care.
