Position Overview

The After School Program Mentor is a part-time, youth-facing position responsible for supporting a consistent group of students in an after-school setting. Youth Mentors serve as positive adult role models, providing supervision, mentorship, and engaging activities that support students’ academic, social-emotional, and physical development.

This role works closely with Site Leads and Assistant Programs Manager to ensure a safe, structured, and supportive program environment.

Key Responsibilities

Youth Supervision & Support

• Provide consistent, active supervision of assigned students during program hours
• Serve as a positive role model, mentor, and support person for youth
• Maintain a safe and respectful environment aligned with program expectations
• Use positive behavior guidance and redirection strategies
• Observe and report concerns related to student safety, behavior, or well-being

Program Activities & Engagement

• Support and facilitate age-appropriate activities across academic support, enrichment, recreation, and wellness
• Assist with planning and preparing materials for daily activities
• Encourage participation, teamwork, and positive peer interactions
• Support transitions between activities, snack time, and dismissal

Program Operations & Safety

• Accurately complete attendance rosters and required documentation
• Follow all organizational policies, safety procedures, and emergency protocols
• Support snack or meal distribution and clean-up
• Maintain a clean, organized program space

Communication & Teamwork

• Communicate regularly with Site Leads or Program Managers regarding student needs and concerns
• Build positive, respectful relationships with students, families, and staff
• Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, and professional development sessions

Professional Conduct

• Maintain confidentiality regarding students, families, and staff
• Demonstrate reliability, punctuality, and professionalism
• Uphold PAL Center’s mission, values, and code of conduct

Compensation & Benefits

• $21–$24 per hour, based on experience

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required
• Experience working with youth in an after-school, school-day, recreation, or community-based setting preferred
• Strong communication and group supervision skills
• Ability to manage small and large groups of youth
• Cultural responsiveness and ability to work with diverse communities
• Bilingual English/Spanish preferred
• Basic computer skills (email, attendance systems, digital forms)

Requirements

• TB clearance (updated every three years)
• Fingerprinting/background clearance (provided if needed)
• CPR/First Aid certification (training may be provided, recertification every two years)
• Reliable transportation to assigned program site
