Controller

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Controller based in Canada.

This remote Controller role supports a diverse portfolio of small and mid-sized businesses through high-quality, technology-enabled accounting services. You will act as a trusted financial advisor, helping clients strengthen financial operations, reporting, compliance, and decision-making. The position combines hands-on accounting expertise with client relationship management, financial oversight, and team leadership. You will oversee close processes, financial reporting, cash flow, budgeting, and forecasting across multiple engagements. You will also identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen controls, and increase the value delivered through cloud-based accounting solutions. This is an opportunity for a tech-savvy accounting professional to make a direct impact while working collaboratively in a client-focused remote environment.

Accountabilities:

You will take ownership of client accounting engagements, ensuring accurate and timely financial services while providing practical financial guidance and supporting the development of accounting team members.

  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor to a portfolio of clients, building strong relationships and understanding their business objectives.
  • Deliver responsive, value-added financial leadership tailored to individual client needs.
  • Review financial statements, reporting packages, and financial analyses for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable accounting standards and best practices.
  • Oversee month-end and year-end close processes, cash flow management, and financial reporting across multiple client engagements.
  • Ensure accounting deadlines, service expectations, and quality standards are consistently met.
  • Participate in budgeting and forecasting activities.
  • Act as the lead on client engagements, coordinating accountants and accounting specialists to ensure effective service delivery.
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, technical support, coaching, and mentorship to less experienced accounting professionals.
  • Review team members' work and contribute to their ongoing professional development.
  • Resolve complex accounting, reporting, and operational challenges using sound technical expertise and practical business judgment.
  • Identify opportunities to optimize accounting processes, strengthen internal controls, and improve financial operations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional colleagues to share best practices and support client success.
  • Manage multiple client relationships, projects, and competing priorities while maintaining a high level of professionalism and service quality.
  • Contribute to the continued development and improvement of accounting services and processes.

Requirements:

The ideal candidate is a technically strong, technology-oriented accounting professional with excellent client-service skills, leadership capabilities, and a passion for helping businesses improve their financial operations.

  • CPA designation or active CPA candidacy.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally across a range of small and mid-sized organizations.
  • Previous experience in a Controller-level position within an accounting or bookkeeping firm managing a portfolio of clients.
  • Experience as an Accounting Supervisor, Team Lead, or in a similar people-leadership capacity.
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, standards, and regulations, including GAAP and IFRS.
  • Strong experience with cloud-based accounting software and technology-enabled accounting processes.
  • Excellent financial reporting, analysis, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple clients, priorities, and deadlines effectively.
  • Strong client relationship management and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide constructive solutions to complex accounting and operational challenges.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy, compliance, and high-quality work.
  • Natural leadership and mentoring abilities, with a willingness to support the development of accounting professionals.
  • Tech-savvy mindset and enthusiasm for using technology to improve accounting processes and client outcomes.
  • Proactive, solutions-oriented approach and genuine commitment to helping clients succeed.
  • Ability to work full-time in Canada with authorization to work for an employer in Canada.

Benefits:

  • Salary of $90,000–$110,000 CAD.
  • Generous health and wellness benefits.
  • Fully remote work within Canada.
  • Professional development support.
  • Home office setup assistance.
  • Ongoing technology allowance.
  • Opportunity to work with a diverse portfolio of small and mid-sized business clients.
  • Exposure to modern cloud-based accounting technologies and process optimization.
  • Opportunity to provide strategic financial guidance and directly influence client success.
  • Leadership and mentorship opportunities within a collaborative accounting environment.
  • Inclusive and accessible workplace with accommodations available throughout the recruitment and selection process.
