Description:

This Medical Assistant works in the clinic to assist the physician with all aspects of patient care including patient intake, scheduling, and patient education.

Requirements:

Physical: Good physical health required because of long periods of standing, walking and work required. Must be well-coordinated and able to move about freely. Dexterity necessary. Visual and audio acuity. Speak clearly and distinctly. Neat, clean and particular about appearance.

Mental: Stamina to withstand stress and strain. Good memory, patient and tactful. Emotional stability. Able to both listen and direct. Skill in organization.

Education and Licensure: Must be registered Medication Aide with the Department of Health and Human Services. Prefer Medical Assistant to be certified.

Experience: Prefer 1 year of clinic experience in any specialty.

Responsibilities Prepares patient room

Checks and stocks supplies in room.

Determines need for special equipment for patient visit and procures these items for patient visit.

Utilizes appropriate hand hygiene for patient encounter.

Begins clinical encounter

Utilizes the EHR or chart to complete patient intake.

Greets patient and shows them to appropriate room.

Begins assessment of patient by gathering medication lists, allergies, chief complaint and previous relevant treatment.

Documents assessment information in the EHR or chart for physician.

Assists physician with visit

Listens while physician goes through exam and assists as needed.

Instructs on usage of medications.

May give injections.

Schedules necessary tests with outside entities.

Assists with in-office procedures using proper sterile technique. Uses universal precautions when exposed to blood borne pathogens.

Takes history for surgical patients and schedule surgical procedure

Notify CT tech of scans to be done on clinic patients.

Performs patient teaching

Assists physician in explaining surgical procedures.

Answers questions for patient and family members.

Provides information on post-op expectations and care.

Obtains patient/guardian signature on consent form for in-office procedures

Coordination of care

Communicates with pharmacies regarding prescription refills and documents in appropriate patient chart or EHR record.

Communicates patient questions and concerns to physician and conveys response to patients.

Documents all interactions in chart or EHR record.

Performs other related duties

Orders supplies as necessary or informs supervisor of need.

Assists with weekly cleaning and stocking.

Sterilizes instruments properly.

Participates in budgetary, marketing, utilization, cost containment and reduction activities.

Practices economy in the use of time, equipment, and supplies.

Assists in organizing and developing policies and procedures.

Develops effective communication and interpersonal skills.

Utilizes supervisory chain of command.

Travels to out-of-town clinics as needed.

Special Characteristics Displays initiative, and enthusiasm in performing responsibilities of the position.

Assumes responsibilities for own actions.

Seeks help as needed – knows limitations.

Must be able to meet deadlines and schedules.

Must follow and meet organizations dress code, be neat and well groomed.

Must be willing to share knowledge and communicate effectively and to assist in training.
