Description
The Operating Room at University Medical Center currently has eighteen surgical suites. An expansion project is currently underway to add six additional suites. Surgical procedures include; but are not limited, to neurology, orthopedic, general, urology, pain, ENT, dental, plastics, pediatric, ophthalmology, burn, gynecology, renal, thoracic, cardiac, and vascular cases. The operating room nurses provide individualized patient care. Nursing assessments and a chart reviews are conducted prior to any surgical intervention. OR nurses provide holistic care by attending to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of our patients. OR nurses also manage the peri-operative care of the patients by identifying and anticipating the surgeons’ and anesthesiologists’ needs. We recognize and utilize the contributions of the other departments to facilitate quality multidisciplinary approach to patient care. Patient safety is our number one commitment in the UMC OR. Surgical nurses serve as the patients’ advocate and are dedicated to providing an excellent surgical experience for our patients.
ORIENTATION
- UMC General Hospital Orientation
- UMC General Nursing Orientation
- Electronic Documentation training.
Individualized Unit Specific Orientation
- Unit specific orientation is in addition to UMC’s General Hospital Orientation and General Nursing Orientation
- Orientation takes place over a 20 week period and consists of extensive classroom and clinical experience in aseptic technique as well as various types of surgical procedures and specialty services in the circulating role.
- During clinical orientation you will be paired with an experienced nurse preceptor.
- Clinical orientation is conducted on days and nights.
- Call starts with an experienced nurse preceptor after two weeks of clinical orientation in the specific service assigned.
- You will also have many opportunities for professional growth and advancement. Committee involvement is encouraged in order to improve patient care and processes. Committees are available at unit level as well as hospital wide.
- Other opportunities include: mentoring and flexible scheduling to meet individual needs.
Qualifications
- Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing
- Valid Texas Nursing License required.
- Current CPR certification from American Heart Association.
- Customer service abilities including effective listening skills.
- Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment and the ability to work in a fast paced environment.
- Ability to perform work that requires walking, sitting and standing most of the time while on duty. Occasional lifting of patients who need assistance is required.
