POSITIONOVERVIEW:
MercerCounty is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Boiler Operator to supportBuildings and Grounds operations across County facilities. Under direction, theBoiler Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient operation, monitoring,and minor repair of stationary steam boilers, steam generators, and relatedauxiliary equipment used to heat and support public buildings.
Thisposition plays a critical role in maintaining reliable building operations,ensuring compliance with safety standards, and supporting a clean, safe, andefficient mechanical environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Operatesand monitors stationary steam boilers, steam generators, and auxiliary boilerequipment in accordance with safety regulations and established procedures.
- Firesboilers using automatic stokers, hand firing methods, or oil burners andregulates fuel flow as required.
- Controlsvalves, feed pumps, pressure gauges, and draft systems to maintain properboiler operation.
- Maintainsappropriate water levels, pressure, temperature, and draft conditions to ensureefficient and safe performance.
- Performsminor repairs and routine maintenance on boilers, grate units, tubes, caps,pumps, motors, and related equipment.
- Conductsbasic boiler water tests and operates water conditioning equipment as needed.
- Recordsfuel usage, pressure readings, temperatures, steam flow, and other operationaldata in logs and records.
- Respondsto equipment malfunctions and makes emergency repairs to maintain continuousoperation.
- Maintainsboiler rooms, pump rooms, furnace rooms, and adjacent areas in a clean,orderly, and safe condition.
- Reportsequipment damage, safety concerns, or low fuel supply promptly to appropriatepersonnel.
- Assistswith general maintenance tasks, including cleaning, minor repairs, and groundsupkeep when required.
- Learns andutilizes electronic and/or manual recordkeeping and computerized systems usedby the County.
- Performsrelated duties as assigned to support facility operations.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Applicantsmust possess a current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License of theappropriate type (high or low pressure) issued by the New Jersey Department ofLabor and Workforce Development.
- Appointeeswill be required to possess a valid New Jersey driver's license only ifoperation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of theposition.
KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS, & ABILITIES:
- Knowledgeof the operation, maintenance, and repair of stationary steam boilers andauxiliary equipment.
- Knowledgeof boiler safety devices, firing methods, fuel systems, and pressure controls.
- Knowledgeof water level requirements, draft regulation, and combustion efficiencyprinciples.
- Knowledgeof maintenance practices for boiler rooms, pump rooms, and mechanicalequipment.
- Ability tosafely operate boilers using automatic stokers, hand firing, and oil burners.
- Ability toinspect, maintain, clean, lubricate, and make minor repairs to boilers andrelated machinery.
- Ability toanalyze boiler operation issues and apply effective corrective actions.
- Ability totake accurate instrument readings and maintain detailed operational logs andrecords.
- Ability tomaintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
- Ability tolearn and use electronic and manual information and recordkeeping systems.
- Ability tofollow safety protocols, respond to emergencies, and work under supervision asrequired.
