Job Description

Senior Boiler Technician

Essential Services is hiring a Senior Boiler Technician to lead installation, troubleshooting, and repair in the commercial and industrial boiler rooms we operate and maintain. The role is full-time with multiple work locations, travel, and also trains the next generation of operators at The Training Center.

About Essential Services

For more than 40 years, Essential Services (formerly The Training Center Group) has supplied licensed boiler operators, refrigeration operators, and stationary engineers to industrial and commercial facilities across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. Our 100+ licensed professionals keep pharmaceutical, food production, healthcare, utility, and manufacturing plants safe, compliant, and running.

We were born from The Training Center, the vocational school that trains and licenses operators, engineers, and technicians. That connection is our advantage: we hire from the people we train, and our senior technicians help train them.

Position at a glance

* Location: 2 locations (1) Wrightstown and (2) Branchburg with client plants across New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, New York, and future locations are expected.

* Type: Full-time, hourly, overtime eligible.

* Schedule: Weekday Day shift, plus an on-call rotation for emergency service and operator coverage.

* Reports to: Essential Services operations management

Start: As soon as possible, with a planned hand-off from our current senior technician through spring 2027.

What you will do

You will be the technician our operators call when something in the boiler room is not right, and the person our clients trust to fix it, test it, and sign off on it.

Field service, troubleshooting, and repair

* Diagnose and repair firetube, watertube, and packaged boilers, low and high pressure, steam and hot water, from commercial units through large industrial plants.

* Troubleshoot burners, flame safeguards and burner management systems, gas trains, feedwater and condensate systems, pumps, and boiler room control circuits from 24 VAC through 480 VAC.

* Take calls from Essential Services operators, triage the problem by phone, and talk them through safe corrective action or go to the site yourself.

* Respond to emergency service calls through an on-call rotation, and step in as a licensed operator when a client plant needs emergency coverage.

Installation, startup, and commissioning

* Project Manager Install and replace boilers, burners, controls, and boiler room accessories, and oversee outside contractors when a project calls for them.

* Perform startups and commissioning: safety interlock verification, flame safeguard checkout, combustion setup, and a documented handover to the operating crew.

* Recommend upgrades such as controls retrofits, burner replacements, and efficiency improvements, and help clients plan for future needs.

Inspection, testing, and code compliance

* Perform ASME CSD-1 inspections, functional tests, and written reports.

* Conduct semiannual low-water cutoff slow drain tests and safety shutoff valve (SSOV) seat leakage tests.

* Perform combustion analysis and tune burners for safe, efficient firing, recording O2, CO, and stack temperature before and after.

* Prepare boilers for state and insurance inspections and correct the deficiencies inspectors find.

* Keep complete service records, test reports, and work orders for every visit.

Customer accounts and contracts

* Quote annual service contracts and preventive maintenance agreements, then set up the service schedule once the client signs.

* Oversee project setup for new customers, from site evaluation through the first scheduled service.

* Join plant evaluations with the operations team and give clients clear, written findings.

Training and program development

* Train Essential Services operators on site to sharpen their skills and help them advance their licenses during service downtime.

* Support the TAP career program, the externship program and extern workshops, and continuing education and corporate training classes.
