About This Position
Description:
Screed Operation & Asphalt Placement
- Operates and controls the screed at the rear of the asphalt paver to achieve the required mat thickness, slope, crown, and overall grade.
- Monitors the flow and consistency of asphalt material as it passes under the screed.
- Makes real-time adjustments to screed settings, tow points, and heating elements to ensure optimal performance.
Quality & Level Control
- Ensures the paved surface is smooth, level, and meets all project specifications and tolerances.
- Continuously checks grade, depth, and alignment using appropriate tools and visual inspection.
- Works to prevent imperfections such as waves, tears, and inconsistencies in the asphalt mat.
Coordination & Communication
- Works closely with the Paving Operator, Roller Operator, and ground crew to maintain consistent paving speed and material flow.
- Communicates adjustments or concerns promptly to maintain production quality and efficiency.
- Assists in monitoring environmental and site conditions (temperature, wind, material behavior) that may affect mat quality.
Equipment Care & Safety
- Performs pre-shift equipment inspections and ensures the screed is clean, heated, and operating properly.
- Identifies and reports mechanical issues to reduce downtime and maintain equipment reliability.
- Follows all company safety protocols, including PPE requirements, traffic control rules, and work-zone awareness.
Qualifications
- Previous experience operating asphalt paver screeds strongly preferred
- Understanding of asphalt paving principles including grade control, material behavior, and compaction
- Ability to perform basic mechanical adjustments and troubleshooting
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- Ability to work efficiently in outdoor environments and various weather conditions
- High attention to detail and commitment to producing quality work
