Position Summary

The Personal Assistant provides direct support and training to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This role assists individuals with daily living activities, personal care, community participation, skill development, and medication administration while promoting independence, dignity, safety, and choice.

What You'll Do

  • Assist individuals with activities of daily living, including personal care, hygiene, meal preparation, and household tasks.
  • Support individuals in developing life skills, independence, and achieving personal goals.
  • Administer medications and monitor for side effects after becoming medication certified.
  • Follow Individual Support Plans (ISPs), Behavioral Support Plans (BSPs), and agency policies.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, daily notes, medication records, and incident reports.
  • Promote the health, safety, rights, and well-being of individuals supported.
  • Recognize and immediately report suspected abuse, neglect, exploitation, or other incidents according to agency and state requirements.
  • Assist with community outings, recreational activities, appointments, and social engagement opportunities.
  • Help maintain a safe, clean, and organized living environment.
  • Participate in required training and communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, families, and other support providers.
  • Support individuals with positive behavior strategies and encourage choice, self-advocacy, and independence.

What a Typical Day May Look Like

No two days are exactly alike, but a typical day may include:

  • Assisting someone with their morning routine and personal care
  • Preparing meals and supporting healthy choices
  • Providing transportation to appointments, work, or community activities
  • Teaching household skills such as cooking, laundry, and cleaning
  • Supporting medication administration and health-related needs
  • Encouraging participation in hobbies, social activities, and community events
  • Completing documentation and sharing important updates with the team
  • Celebrating accomplishments and helping individuals achieve their goals
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or GED required
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
  • Ability to pass background checks and required training
  • Strong communication and documentation skills
  • Ability to support individuals with varying needs and work as part of a team
  • Ability to become medication certified
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends
  • Ability to lift, transfer, and assist individuals as needed
  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred
