Job Overview:
The Pharmacy Sterile Products Supervisor is responsible for the daily oversight and management of all sterile compounding operations within the pharmacy department. In a community hospital setting, the Pharmacy Sterile Products Supervisor also supports staff training, quality assurance initiatives, and coordination of experiential learning for pharmacy students and residents. They also make the technicians' schedule.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Minimum of 3 years of hospital experience
- Minimum 1 year experience in sterile compounding
Preferred:
- Leadership experience, staff supervision of sterile products
Certifications and Licenses Required:
- Registration in New Jersey as a licensed pharmacist or a licensed pharmacy technician with a current certification as a Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) issued by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)

Essential Functions:
- Lead sterile compounding staff by managing schedules, training, assignments, and performance
- Coordinate and conduct training and competency assessments for staff involved in sterile compounding
- Participate in internal audits, quality assurance reviews, and readiness for external inspections or accreditation visits
- Work collaboratively with pharmacy leadership to improve workflow, efficiency, and safety within sterile products services
- Supervise daily sterile compounding operations in the IV rooms, including preparation, labeling, packaging, and distribution of Compounded Sterile Products CSPs
- Ensure full compliance with USP 797, USP 800, New Jersey board of pharmacy regulations, Joint Commission standards, and institutional policies
- Monitor and maintain the SCA environment, ensuring that environmental monitoring, cleaning protocols, and engineering controls meet required standards
- Oversee documentation practices including batch records, beyond-use dating, equipment logs, and quality assurance records
- Support academic mission by providing instruction, oversight, and mentorship to pharmacy students and residents completing sterile compounding rotations
- Supervision and Leadership: Overseeing and coordinating the daily work assignments, scheduling, and overall performance of pharmacy technicians
- Workflow Management: Monitoring and managing the flow of tasks within the pharmacy, ensuring efficient and timely completion of medication preparation, dispensing, and distribution processes
- Quality Assurance & Compliance: Ensuring adherence to all relevant policies, procedures, regulations, and quality standards related to pharmacy operations, medication safety, and patient care
- Training & Development: Participating in the training and orientation of new technicians and supporting the ongoing professional development of the team
- Inventory Management: Overseeing ordering, receiving, stocking, and managing pharmacy inventory, including anticipating needs and ensuring accurate stock levels for sterile supplies, hazardous medications, and compounding ingredients
- Medication Preparation and Dispensing: Supporting the pharmacy team in the preparation, compounding, and dispensing of medications, including sterile and non-sterile compounds, as per established procedures and regulations
- Collaboration: Working with pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to resolve medication-related issues and ensure seamless patient care
- Reporting & Documentation: Maintaining accurate records and documentation in accordance with legal and regulatory requirements, and preparing reports on pharmacy operations as needed
- Other duties as assigned
