Job Description

Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Vice Chair and Chair of the Department of Surgery, ultimately reporting to the CEO of RMG, and as a member of the Renown Medical Group (RMG) and UNR Department of Surgery, the Division Chief-Orthopedics will work directly and jointly with providers in inpatient and outpatient settings. Direct Reports include physicians and/or advanced practice clinicians within the division of orthopedics. The role will need to work effectively within matrix relationships and with other Clinical Integrated Health Network (CIHN) leadership.

The Division Chief of Orthopedics for the Renown Medical Group will be responsible for leading the division for quality, call schedule, strategy, clinic development, research and education, and department of surgery needs in conjunction with the Department of Surgery leadership.

The Division Chief-Orthopedics will also have majority clinical time dedicated to patient care. The incumbent obtains history, examines, diagnoses, counsels, and treats patients within the physician’s area of specialty and experience. The incumbent makes critical decisions regarding medical care. The incumbent works closely and in cooperation with the management staff, directs comments, questions to the appropriate management person, and follows administrative policies. The incumbent actively participates in physician governance, quality, educational and strategy meetings, management decisions, and follows policies adopted by Renown Health and its medical staff. The incumbent stays abreast of current advances in medicine by reviewing recent publications, attending in-services and educational meetings, and attending continuing medical education programs in the appropriate field. The incumbent will take equal call with the rest of the Orthopedics Division to ensure 24-7 coverage of the practice patients but will share in the ER call coverage at both Renown hospitals with the community physicians.

This position includes clinical care of surgical patients, education of medical students and residents as well as the opportunity to lead the research activity/portfolio for the Division of Orthopedics. Teaching responsibilities include involvement in student, resident, and fellow education. The incumbent will also play key roles in various educational (e.g., training, preceptorship, mentoring, etc.) and research programs (e.g., clinical trials, innovation, and patents, etc.) at Renown Health.

Nature and Scope

As the Division Chief for Orthopedics, provider shall lead the specialty in developing evidenced-based practice and protocols, coordinate the Renown Medical Group Orthopedics call schedule, develop the Orthopedic service line strategy, oversee the recruitment of Orthopedic physicians and advanced practice clinicians, and develop the role and responsibilities of the advanced practice clinicians to support the inpatient/outpatient setting.

Reporting to the Vice Chair and Chair of Surgery and other health system senior leaders and management, this position is responsible for leading Renown Health’s Orthopedic service line. The role will be instrumental in developing a patient-centered approach that will drive practices, strategies, and performance of the Orthopedic Service Line within the CIHN. This role serves as a leader of the provider reporting structure for the Orthopedic physicians, advanced practice clinicians at the Renown Regional and South Meadows campuses and will be required to work with administrative and physician leadership to drive performance including but not limited to patient experience, clinical outcomes, utilization, transformational healthcare, and financial outcomes. As part of Renown Health’s CIHN, the Division Chief is responsible for the leadership of clinical staff and support staff in the Orthopedic Service Line. The role will facilitate initiatives that fall in line with the CIHN strategies for the Orthopedic Service Line.

This role will drive orthopedic clinical integration initiatives within the practice and coordinate throughout the Integrated Health Network for the items including, but not limited to, Accountable Care, Medical Home Privation Order Sets & Pathways.

This position will be responsible for educating providers around key initiatives and strategies for the CIHN as they relate to the Orthopedic Service Line.

This position will collaborate directly with the Senior Director of Operations to create a premier Orthopedic Service Line for Renown Health and the community.

This role addresses disruptive Provider behavior from a Renown Health and organized medical staff perspective.

Minimum Qualifications
Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Name

Description

Education:

Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English. Medical Degree from an accredited Medical School required. Advanced degree in business desirable.

Experience:

Minimum of three to five years leadership experience in acute health care facility and/or an integrated health network. Preference given to those candidates with previous medical leadership experience with an integrated health network. Completion of Orthopedic Fellowship will be considered an asset.

License(s):

Must possess and maintain a current and valid State of Nevada Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic (DO) medicine license. Controlled substance License to Prescribe issued by the State of Nevada and Controlled Substance Registration Certificate issued by the DEA, required.

Certification(s):

Board-Eligible or Board-Certified in Orthopedic Surgery through the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery (ABOS). If Provider is Board Eligible at time of hire, Certification must be obtained within two (2) years of employment.

Basic Life Support (BLS) or Advanced Certification Life Support (ACLS) or Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) required. Prefer American Heart Association (AHA) approved certification but will accept online certification from American Red Cross Training Services, Advanced Medical Certification, or ACLS Certification Institute.

Computer / Typing:

Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word and have the ability to use the computer to complete online learning requirements for job-specific competencies, access online forms and policies, complete online benefits enrollment, etc.

Ability to credential through Renown’s Medical Staff and/or payor credentialing, as applicable.
