About This Position

Description:

SUMMARY:

Employee will participate in construction inspection, including verifying elevations and alignments, monitoring construction progress, and ensuring compliance with project plans and specifications. The employee will also contribute to preparing reports and calculations, reviewing and validating laboratory test data, compiling final documentation such as daily reports, construction logs, and final construction project reports. Assignments will be in both field-based and office-based work areas.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills and Abilities):

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Previous experience with general construction inspection required.
  • Inspection of construction for transportation projects preferred.
  • Landfill or solid waste surface impoundment construction preferred.
  • Experience with HDPE liner installation and HDPE pipe installation required.
  • Previous experience and operation knowledge of compaction testing equipment, including nuclear density gauge, is preferred.
  • Three years’ experience with an engineering background is preferred.
  • Ability to read engineering drawings maps is preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and maintain an insurable driving record.
  • Strong consultative, organizational, interpersonal and communication (verbal & written) skills.
  • Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness; looks for ways to improve and promote quality; applies feedback to improve performance; monitors own work to ensure quality. Prioritizes and plans work efficiently.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Serves as primary construction inspector in area or areas of specialization/certification; determines sample requirements for area(s) of expertise.
  • Verifies elevations/alignments of construction work for survey.
  • Prepares work reports, estimate quantities, and/or calculations.
  • Uses a thorough knowledge and understanding of Department procedures, policies, standards, and specifications in the processing of construction-related documents such as partial and final estimates.
  • Independently reviews test reports for coding accuracy and complete data; recommends corrective action to laboratory technicians.
  • Uses knowledge of laboratory documentation procedures and terminology to compile final reports, such as borrow pit investigations, soil surveys and final acceptance measurements; prepares sampling plans.
  • Monitors construction progress and advises appropriate personnel of FHWA Independent Assurance testing needs; compiles data and produces final Independent Assurance report for a District Laboratory Engineer's approval.
