About This Position
Position Summary:
To organize and supervise camp aquatic activities in a manner consistent with State of Michigan Licensing Rules, GSUSA Guidelines, and GSSEM Safety Activity Checkpoints. Enforce pool procedures in accordance with all applicable guidelines. Create and execute aquatic and rainy-day programming indoors for all ages.
Key Responsibilities:
• To incorporate opportunities for teaching courage, confidence, and character during daily interaction with campers and staff.
Establish and maintain the pool space with appropriate equipment and documentation.
• Complete and systematically file all inspections and safety checks completed.
• Follow all safety rules and procedures at the pool.
• Act decisively and competently in any emergencies and make appropriate decisions regarding safety at the pool.
• Leads instructions for swim tests & buddy checks for each cabin group while they are at the pool.
• Notify the assistant director of camps when equipment is not in usable condition.
• Maintains the storage space at the pool, to ensure damage to equipment is kept to a minimum.
• Carries out daily cleaning, sanitizing, and maintenance of the pool deck & locker rooms.
• Assists in implementation of the rules of State of Michigan Licensing Guidelines and GSUSA.
• Provide nightly “on-call” assistance to units and provide coverage for cabin staff as needed.
• Always be available to campers and staff during duty hours.
• File incident/accident reports daily.
• Complete & document daily checks of the first aid kit for the pool.
• Provide instruction for all staff during the pre-camp training period related to the pool, safety, swim tests, & buddy checks.
• Maintains appropriate communication with campers and staff regarding safety and procedures at the pool.
• Modeling proper behaviors and practices to promote the safety of all campers and staff.
• Other duties as assigned.
Essential Requirements:
This position requires registration as a member of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
Must be at least 18 years of age
Hold the minimum certification of Lifeguard Shallow Water, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
Certified Lifeguard Instructor, preferred.
Experienced swim instructor, preferred.
Must be able to take immediate action during emergency situations in a calm and competent manner and to accept guidance and direction.
Must be willing to live onsite and be on-call in case of emergencies.
Equipment Used:
• Standard office equipment – Computer, multi-line telephone, TV, audio visual equipment including laptop and LCD projector.
• Lifesaving equipment, buddy boards, pool vacuum, pool equipment, and standard cleaning equipment.
Physical Activities:
Ability to walk, stand, and sit for long periods of time (4-5 hours) during pool sessions while being engaged. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds in and out of the water. Remain outdoors or in the sun for prolonged periods of time.
Physical Demands: Sufficient strength to lift, push and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance
Software: Microsoft Office Suite; Microsoft Outlook or equivalent calendaring systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
• Be able to evaluate swimming skills at all levels and supervise campers.
• Good judgement in anticipating and preventing accidents.
• Previous experience in a management or supervisory position.
• Experience in teaching youth activities is required.
• Knowledge of safety practices as applicable.
• Must be ready and able to communicate well with campers and staff
• Be flexible with programming options.
Visual Acuity Required: Moderate Acuity: Be able to watch a pool for long periods of time (4-5 hours) safely.
Work Conditions:
Activities occur both in an indoor and outdoor environment. Can be working in inclement weather, both hot and rainy.
