About This Position

Position Summary:
To provide challenge course programming in a manner consistent to State of Michigan Licensing Rules, GSUSA Guidelines, GSSEM Safety Activity Checkpoints, and ACCT Policies and Procedures. Be responsible for the maintenance, documentation and inspection of the equipment used at the challenge course. Create an atmosphere of teamwork by leading girls through teambuilding programming on and off the challenge course. Assist in opening and closing of the challenge course at camp.

Key Responsibilities:
• To incorporate opportunities for teaching courage, confidence, and character during daily interaction with campers and staff.
• Establish and maintain the challenge course space with appropriate equipment & documentation.
• Complete and systematically file all inspections, near misses, and safety checks completed.
• Follow all safety rules and procedures at the challenge course.
• Act decisively and competently in any emergencies and make appropriate decisions regarding safety at the challenge course.
• Leads debrief sessions after each challenge course session, low ropes, rock wall, or high ropes.
• Notify the assistant camp director when equipment is not in usable condition.
• Maintains the storage space at the challenge course, to ensure damage to equipment is kept to a minimum.
• Carries out daily cleaning, sanitizing, and maintenance of the challenge course.
• Assists in implementation of the rules of State of Michigan Licensing Guidelines, ABEE, and GSUSA.
• Provide nightly “on-call” assistance to units and provide coverage for cabin staff as needed.
• Always be available to campers and staff during duty hours.
• File incident/accident reports daily.
• Complete & document daily checks of the first aid kit for challenge course.
• Provide instruction for all staff during the pre-camp training period related to the challenge course safety, procedures, and debriefing.
• Maintains appropriate communication with campers and staff regarding safety and procedures at the challenge course.
• Modeling proper behaviors and practices to promote the safety of all campers and staff.
• Other duties as assigned.

Essential Requirements:
This position requires registration as a member of Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.
Must be an adult, at least 21
Current instructor certification from a nationally recognized ACCT accreditation provider or experience in Challenge Courses
• Be able to evaluate challenge course skills at all levels and teach lessons.
• Good judgment in anticipating and preventing accidents.
• Be able to act calmly, quickly, and give and/or follow directions during an emergency.
• Previous experience in a management or supervisory position.
• Experience in teaching youth activities is required.
• Knowledge of safety practices as applicable.
• Must be ready and able to communicate well with campers and staff and be flexible about programming options.
• Must be willing to live on site and be on call in case of emergencies.
• Hold the minimum certification of CPR and First Aid
• Be able to fill out paperwork and fill out reports

Equipment Used: Harnesses, helmets, ropes, belay systems, ladders, carabiners.

Physical Activities: Sitting, standing, climbing, walking, reaching, reading, operating equipment (listed above), counting, writing, typing. Must be able to lift 30 pounds. Belay up to 100 pounds.

Physical Demands: Sufficient strength to lift, push and carry up to 50 pounds without assistance. Ability to walk, stand, and sit for long periods of time. (2-3 hours). Walk distances of 2-3 miles in a day. Respond quickly to potential emergencies.

Software: Microsoft Office Suite; Microsoft Outlook or equivalent calendaring systems
Visual Acuity Required: Moderate Acuity: Preparing and analyzing data and figures using computer.

Work Conditions: Activities occur both in an indoor and outdoor environment. Primarily outdoors, in the heat.
