Description:

St. Paul Academy and Summit School seeks a temporary Upper School Physical Health and Wellness Teacher as a long-term substitute.

About St. Paul Academy and Summit School:

St. Paul Academy and Summit School (SPA) is a coeducational, non-sectarian, college-preparatory day school serving more than 920 students in kindergarten through grade 12. Our two campuses are located approximately a mile apart in St. Paul, Minnesota, serving Grades K-5 on our Goodrich Campus and Grades 6-12 on our Randolph Campus. The school draws students from St. Paul, Minneapolis, and throughout the eastern and western suburbs.

Our mission—shaping the minds and the hearts of the people who will change the world—is a promise to our students and our families, and it pushes us to be thoughtful about everything we do. It inspires us to be our best and reminds us that we have the responsibility to respect the unique potential in every child. Our mission gives us purpose and represents our greatest aspirations and values. But most of all, it reflects our deep belief in our students' talents and capabilities.

Students develop the habits and relationships that will carry them through high school and into the world of college and beyond. The Upper School's rigorous academic curriculum and seminar-based learning model is complemented by a network of support that includes teachers, advisors, college counselors, and resources for both academic and social/emotional well-being.

The job will extend from February 9, 2027 to June 11, 2027.

Salary range: $230/day

The primary responsibilities of the role are:

  • Teaching 4 sections of Upper School Physical Education to students in Grade 9
  • Advising a group of Upper School Students in Grade 9

Our physical education classes are centered on a holistic approach to health topics and activities that promote students’ physical and emotional health and well-being. Students explore various topics that promote a healthy sense of self and a positive approach to fitness, nutrition, and healthy habits. The 9th-grade course addresses the construction and implementation of goal setting as it relates to overall well-being. Content may include nutrition, mindfulness, and healthy decision-making. The class also participates in various sports, games, and conditioning activities. The goal is to provide students with a framework for making healthy choices and developing healthy life habits.

The ideal candidate will strive to better understand the emotional needs of their students and support a program that emphasizes self-reflection, empathy, and flexibility. Excellent interpersonal skills, including collaboration and communication with both colleagues and students, are required. Candidates should support the mission of SPA and the vision of the Upper School, and be eager to join a professional community where openness to growth is the norm.

Requirements:

Ideally, candidates would possess a bachelor's degree in physical education, health education, psychology, or another health-related field, and should have experience working with high school students as a teacher. Candidates should also have knowledge of the social-emotional needs of younger high school students, enabling them to support student growth during the transition from middle school to high school.

SPA is committed to recruiting and supporting a diverse faculty and staff, and maintaining a workplace culture in which all are treated equitably.
