Job Description
Under the general direction of the Recreation Program Manager, the Youth Basketball Coordinator is responsible for the planning, coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the Town of Trumbulls youth basketball programs. The Coordinator oversees the day-to-day operation of the basketball program, including player development, coach recruitment and support, scheduling, communication with families, and the overall quality and consistency of the program.
The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience coaching youth basketball and working directly with players of varying ages and skill levels. The candidate must also possess the ability to mentor, guide, and support volunteer and/or seasonal coaches to ensure that all teams provide a positive, safe, developmentally appropriate, and consistent experience for participants.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Program Coordination: Plan, coordinate, and oversee the Towns youth basketball programs, including player registration, evaluations, team formation, schedules, facilities, equipment, officials, and overall program operations.
- Coach Recruitment, Training & Mentoring: Recruit, orient, train, and mentor youth basketball coaches; establish clear coaching expectations; provide practice plans, drills, resources, and ongoing guidance; and observe practices and/or games to provide constructive feedback.
- Program Supervision & Standards: Monitor practices and games to ensure coaches, players, and officials follow established program rules, safety procedures, and Town policies while maintaining a positive, inclusive, and sportsmanlike environment.
- Communication & Customer Service: Serve as a primary resource for coaches, players, and parents/guardians; respond to questions and concerns; address conflicts or disciplinary matters; and maintain clear and professional communication with all program participants and staff.
- Program Evaluation & Administration: Maintain appropriate program records, assist with marketing and communications, monitor equipment and supplies, evaluate program effectiveness, and recommend improvements to enhance the overall quality of the youth basketball program.
Works under the general direction of the Recreation Manager and/or Superintendent of Parks & Recreation.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Provides direction, training, mentorship, and program oversight to youth basketball coaches, officials, volunteers, and other program personnel as assigned.Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of youth basketball, including fundamental skills, rules, strategies, and age-appropriate player development.
- Demonstrated ability to coach and motivate youth players of varying ages and skill levels.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor, train, and provide constructive feedback to youth sports coaches.
- Ability to develop positive relationships with children, parents/guardians, coaches, officials, staff, and community members.
- Ability to establish clear expectations and provide effective leadership to coaches and program staff.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to effectively handle conflicts, concerns, and difficult situations in a professional manner.
- Ability to organize and manage multiple program responsibilities while meeting established deadlines.
- Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment.
- Ability to promote a positive, inclusive, and sportsmanlike environment.
- Knowledge of youth sports safety practices and appropriate supervision of children.
- Ability to use computers and common office software for scheduling, communication, recordkeeping, and program administration.
- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with Town employees, schools, community organizations, parents, coaches, officials, and participants.
- Must demonstrate maturity, patience, enthusiasm, professionalism, and sound judgment.
High school diploma or equivalent required. College coursework or a degree in Recreation, Sports Management, Education, Physical Education, or a related field is preferred.
The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience coaching youth basketball, preferably in a recreational, school, club, or community-based program. Previous experience recruiting, training, mentoring, or supervising youth sports coaches is strongly preferred.
Candidates should possess:
- A minimum of [two (2)] years of experience coaching youth basketball.
- Demonstrated experience working with children and youth of varying ages and abilities.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and provide constructive feedback to coaches.
- Knowledge of age-appropriate basketball instruction and player development.
- Experience working with parents/guardians and addressing participant or team concerns.
- Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
- Availability to attend evening and/or weekend practices and games as required by the program.
