Sheet Metal CAD/CAM Programming Specialist
Location: Newport News, VA
Job Type: Full-Time | Contract-to-Hire
Schedule: 1st Shift | Monday–Friday | 7:00 AM – 3:30 PM EST
Compensation: Starting at $25/hour, with higher pay available based on experience
Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled CAD/CAM Programming Specialist with experience in CNC sheet metal fabrication. This role is responsible for developing, updating, and optimizing CNC programs while supporting production efficiency and manufacturing accuracy.
The ideal candidate will have experience interpreting technical drawings, creating flat patterns, troubleshooting production issues, and collaborating with engineering teams to support fabrication operations. This position also plays a key role in tooling selection, process improvement, and documentation development.
- Create, modify, and maintain CNC programs and revision files for production parts
- Interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and models to develop flat pattern layouts
- Support manufacturing through reverse engineering of components and parts
- Collaborate with engineering and production teams to improve manufacturability
- Select appropriate machinery, tooling, and fabrication methods for efficient production
- Recommend and coordinate procurement of tooling as needed
- Develop setup sheets, work instructions, and standardized production documentation
- Utilize CAD/CAM systems to improve machine run times and programming efficiency
- Troubleshoot programming and production-related issues on the shop floor
Experience with the following equipment is highly beneficial:
- Fiber laser cutting systems
- CNC turret punch presses
- Turret punch/laser combination machines
- Precision sheet metal fabrication equipment
Preferred experience with:
- SolidWorks
- CAMWorks
- SigmaNEST or similar nesting software
- CAD/CAM programming applications for sheet metal fabrication
- Minimum of 3 years of CNC programming experience in sheet metal fabrication
- CNC laser programming experience preferred but not required
- Strong understanding of fabrication processes, tooling, bend deductions, and material properties
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical plans
- Working knowledge of G-Code programming, editing, and troubleshooting
- Strong mathematical and problem-solving skills
- Mechanical aptitude and manufacturing knowledge preferred
