Job Description
The Medical Assistant (MA) performs routine clinical, administrative, and supportive functions in a clinic setting under direct supervision. The MA works within the scope of practice defined by the State of California and supports providers and nurse case managers to ensure efficient patient care, coordination, and clinic operations.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities
Clinical Duties
• Perform routine patient care functions as directed by licensed healthcare providers following established protocols.
• Take and record vital signs (height, weight, blood pressure, etc.).
• Prepare patients for examinations and assist during procedures.
• Administer medications as ordered by the provider.
• Collect and prepare specimens (urine, stool, etc.) for laboratory testing.
• Maintain infection control standards and sterilize instruments/equipment.
• Respond to emergencies, including assisting with CPR and urgent patient care.
• Educate patients on procedures, general health information, and basic self-care.
Administrative & Care Coordination Duties
• Serve as primary lead for eligibility verification, referrals, appointment scheduling, and transportation coordination.
• Answer and manage phone calls, take messages, and respond to patient inquiries.
• Prepare, send, and track faxes; maintain logs and outgoing correspondence.
• Schedule and confirm patient appointments.
• Request and manage medical records.
• Complete and process forms for labs, radiology, and specialized testing.
• Document patient information accurately while maintaining confidentiality.
Care Team Support
• Assist Nurse Case Managers with diagnostics, labs, patient care needs, and documentation.
• Provide clinical and administrative support as needed.
• Communicate effectively with providers and interdisciplinary teams.
General Duties
• Maintain clean and organized work areas and equipment. • Order and stock medical supplies as needed. • Participate in department meetings and training. • Follow all safety and OSHA guidelines. • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred. • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) preferred. • Ability to learn patient care procedures and handle patient-related issues.
Physical Demands
• Ability to lift up to 30 pounds occasionally. • OSHA Bloodborne Pathogen Risk Category I.
