Phlebotomy Instructor

Position Type: Part-Time
Department: Allied Health / Phlebotomy Program
Reports To: Director of Education and Program Manager

Position Summary

We are seeking a qualified and experienced Phlebotomy Instructor to provide classroom and hands-on laboratory instruction for students enrolled in our Phlebotomy program.

The instructor will be responsible for delivering instruction in accordance with the school's BPSS-approved curriculum, maintaining required student records, evaluating student progress and competencies, and ensuring students receive appropriate theoretical and practical instruction in phlebotomy.

The successful candidate must meet applicable New York State Education Department (NYSED), Bureau of Proprietary School Supervision (BPSS) requirements for instructors in licensed private career schools.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Deliver classroom and hands-on laboratory instruction according to the school's BPSS-approved Phlebotomy curriculum.
Teach and demonstrate proper venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques.
Provide instruction in specimen collection, labeling, handling, transportation, and processing.
Teach infection control, standard precautions, bloodborne pathogen safety, and proper disposal of biohazardous materials.
Provide instruction in anatomy and physiology relevant to phlebotomy and blood collection.
Demonstrate the safe and proper use of phlebotomy equipment and supplies.
Teach proper patient identification and preparation procedures.
Educate students regarding patient communication, professionalism, ethics, confidentiality, and appropriate workplace conduct.
Supervise students during laboratory practice and hands-on skills development.
Evaluate and document student competency in required phlebotomy skills.
Administer and grade examinations, assignments, practical assessments, and other required evaluations.
Maintain accurate attendance, grades, progress reports, skills checklists, and other required student records.
Identify students requiring additional academic or clinical skills assistance and provide appropriate support.
Maintain an organized, professional, and safe classroom and laboratory environment.
Ensure appropriate equipment and supplies are available for instruction.
Follow the school's approved curriculum, lesson plans, policies, procedures, and academic standards.
Maintain appropriate instructor-to-student ratios and provide adequate supervision during practical instruction.
Participate in faculty meetings, instructor training, professional development, and other school activities as required.
Cooperate with school administration regarding BPSS reviews, inspections, audits, and documentation requests.
Perform additional instructional duties as assigned by the School Director or administration.
BPSS Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must meet applicable BPSS requirements for teacher licensure/permit eligibility, including:

High school diploma or recognized high school equivalency diploma required.
Minimum of two years of practical occupational experience in phlebotomy or a directly related area acceptable to BPSS.
Practical experience must involve performing the occupation; teaching experience alone does not substitute for required occupational experience.
Must possess any professional license, certification, or other credential required for the subject area being taught, when applicable.
Must be eligible to obtain and maintain the appropriate BPSS Teacher Permit or License for the curriculum/subject area assigned.
Must provide required documentation of education and occupational experience for BPSS personnel licensure.
Preferred Qualifications
Current nationally recognized Phlebotomy Technician certification.
Current CPR/BLS certification.
Previous experience teaching or training phlebotomy students.
Experience working in a hospital, clinical laboratory, physician's office, diagnostic facility, blood donation center, or other healthcare environment.
Knowledge of current phlebotomy procedures, infection-control standards, laboratory safety, and industry practices.
Experience preparing students for national phlebotomy certification examinations.
Skills and Competencies
Strong knowledge of venipuncture and capillary collection techniques.
Ability to effectively demonstrate clinical procedures and supervise hands-on practice.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Strong organizational and classroom-management skills.
Ability to evaluate student performance objectively and provide constructive feedback.
Ability to maintain accurate and timely academic records.
Ability to work effectively with students from diverse educational and professional backgrounds.
Commitment to student success, patient safety, professionalism, and regulatory compliance.
BPSS Teacher Permit / License Requirement

Employment is contingent upon the candidate meeting applicable NYSED-BPSS teacher qualification and licensing requirements for the approved curriculum and instructional area.

Candidates who do not currently hold the appropriate BPSS teacher credential must be eligible to apply for the appropriate permit/license and provide all documentation required by BPSS, including verification of education and qualifying occupational work experience.

The instructor is responsible for maintaining the appropriate BPSS credential required to teach the assigned curriculum.

Physical Requirements

The instructor must be able to demonstrate phlebotomy procedures, safely handle clinical equipment and supplies, supervise laboratory activities, and stand for extended periods during practical instruction. Appropriate personal protective equipment must be used during laboratory demonstrations and hands-on activities.

Position Expectations

The Phlebotomy Instructor is expected to maintain high standards of instruction, professionalism, student supervision, documentation, safety, and regulatory compliance while preparing students with the knowledge and practical skills necessary for entry-level employment in the phlebotomy field.
