Registration Clerk

POSITION PURPOSE AND SUMMARY

The Registration Clerk I is responsible for accurately entering and verifying demographic and insurance information, identifying and collecting patient financial obligations, and registering or admitting patients into the EMR. This position is cross-trained to register ambulatory, emergency department, and admit patients, as well as coordinate preadmissions, and ensure proper admissions documentation relative to diagnosis, attending provider, and service assignment.

The individual is ultimately responsible for assisting patients, via phone, at the bedside, in inpatient and outpatient settings, and in the emergency department. They work closely with registration leads, business office representatives, providers, as well as emergency, ambulatory and inpatient departments. This position is customer service driven, and the individual must have the ability to effectively promote a positive patient and family experience, exhibit empathy, engage in compassionate collections and demonstrate strong communication skills.

Position work hours will vary on a 24-hour a day, 7 days a week rotating shift.

MINIMUM MANDATORY qualifications
Experience:
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a customer service related field.
Education:
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED)
Other Mandatory Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Qualifications:
  • Must maintain a professional appearance and acceptable personal hygiene.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills in handling interactions with hospital staff, patients, and families.
  • Maintain a consistent quarterly accuracy rate of 90% following the probationary period.
  • Ability to work in a busy and demanding environment.
  • Ability to multitask and maintain strong attention to detail.
  • Strong emotional intelligence and empathy.
  • Displays an aptitude and willingness to learn new responsibilities.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and data entry systems.
  • Knowledge of, and sensitivity to, cultural and language differences. Practice courtesy towards patients, visitors, and staff.
  • A record of satisfactory performance in all prior and current employment as evidenced by positive employment references from previous and current employers.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish.
  • Two (2) to three (3) years direct work experience in a healthcare or hospital environment.
