Position Overview

The Heavy Equipment Maintenance Intern works alongside experienced maintenance technicians to support the inspection, servicing, troubleshooting, and repair of heavy mobile equipment used in aggregate operations. This position provides hands-on experience with loaders, haul trucks, dozers, excavators, and other mobile equipment while introducing the intern to preventative maintenance, mechanical troubleshooting, equipment repair, and safe maintenance practices in an industrial environment.

The internship is designed for students pursuing a career in diesel mechanics, heavy equipment technology, industrial maintenance, or a related technical field who want to develop practical skills while learning from experienced maintenance professionals.

What You'll Do

  • Assist experienced maintenance technicians with routine servicing, inspections, and minor repairs of heavy mobile equipment, including loaders, haul trucks, dozers, excavators, and other equipment used in aggregate operations.
  • Support preventative maintenance activities, including oil and filter changes, lubrication, fluid checks, and other scheduled maintenance.
  • Assist with basic troubleshooting of mechanical and equipment issues and document findings for review by maintenance personnel.
  • Learn to identify equipment conditions that may require additional maintenance or repair.
  • Read and interpret equipment manuals, service information, and work orders to support maintenance and repair activities.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate equipment maintenance logs, work orders, and service records.
  • Safely use basic hand tools and assist with the use of power tools and maintenance equipment under appropriate supervision.
  • Shadow experienced maintenance technicians to gain exposure to more advanced troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair procedures.
  • Assist with organizing tools, replacement parts, supplies, and maintenance inventory.
  • Participate in daily safety meetings and other maintenance and operational meetings as appropriate.
  • Maintain work areas, tools, and equipment in a safe, clean, and organized condition.
  • Work collaboratively with maintenance and operations personnel to support equipment reliability and availability.
  • Follow all Company and site safety policies, rules, and procedures, as well as applicable MSHA regulations.

Required Skills and Abilities

  • Mechanical aptitude and a strong interest in learning heavy equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.

  • Ability to safely use basic hand tools and assist with power tools and maintenance equipment under appropriate supervision.
  • Ability to read and learn from equipment manuals, work orders, and other technical information.
  • Ability to accurately document maintenance activities and equipment observations.
  • Ability to work effectively alongside experienced maintenance technicians and other operations personnel.
  • Strong commitment to safe work practices and following established procedures.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Currently enrolled in a vocational, technical, or college program in Diesel Mechanics, Heavy Equipment Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or a related technical field.
  • Previous exposure to mechanical work, automotive or diesel repair, heavy equipment, or equipment maintenance is preferred but not required.

Other Qualifications

  • Valid driver's license with a driving record that meets Company requirements.
  • Ability and willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and within an active aggregate operation.
  • Ability to perform work in a physically demanding industrial environment.
  • Willingness to work around heavy mobile equipment, machinery, dust, noise, and other conditions commonly found in aggregate operations.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced industrial environment.
  • Commitment to following all Company safety policies, procedures, and applicable MSHA regulations.
