Job Description

Position Summary
The Service Technician is responsible for performing diagnostics, maintenance, repairs, and inspections on fire apparatus, heavy trucks, and emergency response equipment. This role requires a skilled technician with prior heavy truck or commercial vehicle repair experience who can work independently while maintaining high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. The Service Technician plays a key role in supporting operational readiness for emergency response vehicles by accurately diagnosing issues, completing repairs in a timely manner, and contributing to overall shop productivity and customer satisfaction.

Essential Functions and Core Responsibilities
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Safely operate company vehicles as assigned and, upon obtaining the required Commercial Driver’s License, operate CDL-required vehicles in compliance with applicable laws, safety requirements, and company vehicle-use policies.
Perform diagnostics, inspections, maintenance, and repairs on fire apparatus, heavy trucks, emergency response vehicles, and related equipment in accordance with company, OEM, and safety standards
Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and multiplex systems to identify and resolve operational issues efficiently and accurately
• Complete preventative maintenance services and repair activities to support vehicle reliability, operational readiness, and customer satisfaction
Utilize diagnostic software, OEM service information, testing equipment, and shop tools to support accurate repair execution and problem resolution
Accurately document complaint, cause, correction, labor activity, and repair status information within company systems and work orders • Communicate repair progress, additional repair needs, and operational concerns to shop leadership and service personnel
Maintain clean, safe, and organized work areas in compliance with company safety procedures, PPE requirements, and operational standards
Perform quality checks on completed repairs to ensure equipment is functioning properly and repairs are completed correctly the first time
Properly operate, maintain, and care for company tools, equipment, and customer vehicles
Support shop productivity, workflow efficiency, and operational readiness through dependable work performance and collaboration with team members
Participate in technical training, certification programs, and ongoing skill development activities • Maintain professionalism, teamwork, and positive communication with customers, leadership, and fellow employees
Identify and report unsafe conditions, equipment concerns, or operational risks promptly and appropriately
Regular and reliable attendance is an essential function of this position, including the ability to report to work as scheduled and support operational needs
Required Qualifications
Valid Commercial Driver’s License required at hire, or ability to obtain the required CDL and applicable endorsements within 6–12 (or whatever the timeframe is)months of employment, based on business need; must maintain an acceptable driving record and company driving authorization.
Minimum 2–3 years of experience in heavy truck, diesel, automotive, commercial vehicle, or related equipment repair
Strong mechanical, electrical, and diagnostic troubleshooting skills
Ability to work independently and manage repair activities efficiently in a fast-paced service environment
Experience using diagnostic software, OEM service information, shop equipment, and hand tools
Ability to complete accurate digital work orders and repair documentation
Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred Education, Certifications, and/or Experience:
Class B CDL or ability to obtain within established timeframe based on business needs
Experience working on emergency response vehicles, fire apparatus, or specialty equipment
OEM, EVT, ASE, or related technical certifications
Experience with hydraulic, multiplex, or advanced electrical systems

Physical Demands
Ability to work in shop, yard, field, or service environments around vehicles, tools, machinery, and moving mechanical parts. This role requires physical activity necessary to inspect, diagnose, repair, and service equipment, which may include standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, climbing, using tools, and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling materials consistent with operational needs. Ability to lift or move materials and equipment up to 30 pounds independently and more with appropriate assistance or equipment.
