MEDICAL ASSISTANT – SURGICAL CENTERJOB SUMMARY

The Medical Assistant supports physicians, nurses, and other clinical staff in providing safe and efficient patient care within the Surgical Center. This position assists with patient preparation, pre-operative and post-operative activities, vital signs, documentation, patient flow, procedure room readiness, and other clinical and administrative duties under the direction of licensed clinical staff.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION
  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred; must be able to read, write, and speak English.
  • One (1) to two (2) years of related experience in a medical, surgical, endoscopy, or procedural setting preferred.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology.
  • Strong interpersonal and patient service skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and data-entry accuracy.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to comply with OSHA, HIPAA, infection control, and safety requirements.
  • Proficiency with computers, Electronic Health Records (EHR), email, e-fax, and other systems required to perform assigned duties.
CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES
  • Medical Assistant Certification preferred.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS)/CPR Certification preferred.
ABILITIES/SKILLS
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Ability to assist with patient care activities within the Medical Assistant's permitted scope and under appropriate clinical supervision.
  • Ability to recognize and promptly report abnormal vital signs or changes in a patient's condition to licensed clinical staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask effectively.
  • Ability to work independently within assigned responsibilities and as part of the Surgical Center team.
  • Ability to maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
  • Ability to follow infection control, safety, and universal precautions.
  • Ability to properly use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Basic computer skills and ability to document accurately in the EHR.
  • Dependable, professional, detail-oriented, and able to follow established policies and procedures.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist with daily patient flow throughout the Surgical Center, including pre-operative and post-operative areas, as assigned.
  • Greet patients and assist with preparing them for their scheduled procedure.
  • Verify patient information and assist with ensuring required documentation is available in the medical record.
  • Measure and document vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, height, and weight, as applicable.
  • Obtain and document patient information, including current medications, allergies, and medical history, as directed.
  • Recognize abnormal vital signs or changes in patient condition and immediately report them to the appropriate nurse or physician.
  • Assist clinical staff with preparing patients for procedures within the Medical Assistant's scope of responsibility.
  • Assist with patient positioning, transport, and movement within the Surgical Center as directed by licensed clinical staff.
  • Prepare patient care and procedure areas with necessary supplies and equipment.
  • Clean, disinfect, and prepare patient care areas between patients according to established infection-control procedures.
  • Maintain clean, organized, and appropriately stocked clinical areas.
  • Monitor clinical supply levels and notify the appropriate supervisor when supplies need to be replenished.
  • Assist with receiving, organizing, and storing clinical supplies.
  • Report malfunctioning medical equipment, safety concerns, or other issues immediately to the appropriate supervisor.
  • Assist with maintaining accurate patient records and completing assigned documentation in the EHR.
  • Assist with patient discharge workflow and instructions as directed by licensed clinical staff.
  • Respond professionally to patient questions and refer clinical questions to the appropriate nurse, physician, or other licensed provider.
  • Follow Infection Control, OSHA, biomedical waste, and exposure-control requirements.
  • Follow HIPAA requirements and maintain the confidentiality of patient information.
  • Follow all Surgical Center policies, procedures, safety protocols, and emergency procedures.
  • Work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, anesthesia personnel, technicians, administrative staff, and other members of the Surgical Center team.
  • Conduct all activities in a professional, courteous, and patient-focused manner.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by management and within the scope of the position.
