Responsibility Allocation

The following percentage breakdown reflects the typical allocation of work for a second-shift custodian in an educational facility. Actual work may vary based on campus events, weather conditions, staffing needs, emergency response, and seasonal cleaning schedules. Percentages are intended to describe the general weighting of duties and are not intended to limit assigned work.

Representative Duties

Routine custodial cleaning and sanitation

45%

Daily cleaning and orderliness of assigned areas, including floors, walls, ceilings, windows, furniture, fixtures, restrooms, classrooms, offices, hallways, entrances, and common areas.

Floor care and custodial equipment operation

15%

Operation of vacuums, scrubbers, buffers, mops, brooms, dusters, carpet extractors, and related cleaning equipment; assists with stripping, waxing, and carpet extraction.

Waste, recycling, supplies, and chemical use

12%

Removal of trash and recycling, restocking and dispersing supplies, proper use and storage of cleaning and sanitation chemicals, and following dilution-rate instructions.

Event, furniture, and setup support

10%

Movement of equipment and furniture, room/event setup, special function support, and restoration of spaces following events.

Seasonal, exterior-entry, and weather support

8%

Assists with snow removal at doorways and entry sidewalks, application of ice melt at entry areas and sidewalks, and facility readiness during weather events.

Safety, communication, and risk reporting

5%

Monitors and reports unsafe conditions, supports risk-management expectations, maintains emergency procedure awareness, and carries/uses an operational radio/walkie-talkie.

Departmental support, assessment, and other duties

5%

Supports urgent facility needs outside regular hours when required, assists with departmental assessment/KPI activities, and performs other duties as assigned.

Primary responsibilities
  1. The cleanliness and orderliness of floors, walls, ceilings, windows, furniture and any related equipment or fixtures in the facility.
  2. The operation of equipment such as vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, buffers, brooms, mops, dusters, and the other usual tools used in cleaning operation.
  3. The proper use of cleaning and sanitation chemicals and custodial supplies.
  4. The removal of trash and emptying of recycling bins.
  5. The movement of equipment and furniture as needed to accomplish good cleaning practices.
  6. The set-up of the facility for special functions.
  7. Must be readily available outside of regular work hours to respond to urgent issues within a facility.
  8. Other duties as assigned.
Coordinate:
  1. Supplies dispersal to location used.
Assist with:
  1. Snow removal at doorways and entry sidewalks.
  2. Application of "ice melt" at entry areas and sidewalks.
  3. Movement of equipment and furniture.
  4. Set up equipment for special functions.
  5. Stripping and waxing floors and carpet extraction.
  6. Departmental assessment and establishment of key performance indicators based on the strategic plan.

Risk-management and loss-prevention activities
  1. Actively participate in and carry out activities in support of the college risk-management program in a capacity appropriate to this position.
  2. Monitor conditions, events and circumstances present in the college operation to avoid potential torts or injuries to students, staff or the public, and then communicate observations to the appropriate supervisor and/or risk-management committee.
  3. Maintain a working knowledge of the college’s emergency procedures and how to operate emergency phone systems, including internal/external call boxes.
  4. Always carry an operational radio/walkie-talkie.
Minimum necessary education, skills and experience
  1. High school diploma or GED required.
  2. Must successfully demonstrate, through work experience, the ability to accomplish this type of work.
  3. Must demonstrate ability to read instructions on chemical use and dilution rates.
  4. Valid driver’s license.
  5. The ability to communicate successfully with clients of all ages, socio-economic status, sex, or race.
  6. Spanish or French proficiency preferred.
Physical requirements to perform job functions
  1. Must be able to do arduous work.
  2. Capable of lifting 50 lbs.
  3. Should be able to climb ladders
  4. Vision – with/without correction.
  5. Hearing – perceiving the nature of sounds with/without correction.

Job Conditions & hazards
  1. Bloodborne pathogens exposure - category 1
  2. Subject to both inside and outside environmental conditions.
