Job Description

Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Urology ClinicPosition Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) provides direct patient care and clinical support in a busy Urology Clinic. The LPN works collaboratively with urologists, advanced practice providers, registered nurses, and other members of the healthcare team to provide safe, efficient, and compassionate care to urology patients.

The LPN is responsible for assisting with patient assessment, medication management, procedures, patient education, care coordination, and clinical communication while maintaining a high standard of patient safety and customer service.

Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesPatient Care
  • Obtain and document vital signs, medication reconciliation, allergies, and pertinent medical history.
  • Prepare patients for provider examinations, procedures, and treatments.
  • Assist providers with examinations and urological procedures as directed.
  • Perform nursing interventions within the LPN scope of practice.
  • Monitor patients before, during, and after procedures and report changes in condition to the provider or appropriate nurse.
  • Collect and appropriately label laboratory specimens, including urine specimens, as ordered.
  • Perform or assist with point-of-care testing according to clinic protocols.
  • Provide catheter care and assist with catheter insertion, removal, troubleshooting, and patient education as permitted by scope and organizational policy.
  • Assist with bladder scans and other urology-specific clinical procedures.
  • Provide wound, dressing, and postoperative care as ordered.
  • Recognize abnormal findings and promptly communicate concerns to the provider or supervising RN.
Clinical Procedures
  • Assist with in-office urological procedures and treatments.
  • Prepare examination and procedure rooms and ensure appropriate supplies and equipment are available.
  • Maintain sterile technique when required.
  • Assist with cystoscopy, catheter procedures, biopsies, injections, and other urological procedures as assigned and within scope.
  • Clean, disinfect, and prepare equipment according to infection prevention standards.
  • Ensure procedure rooms are properly stocked and ready for patient care.
Telephone and Patient Communication
  • Respond to patient calls and portal messages within established protocols.
  • Obtain appropriate clinical information and communicate patient concerns to the provider or RN.
  • Provide approved patient education regarding medications, procedures, postoperative care, and follow-up instructions.
  • Reinforce provider instructions and identify situations requiring immediate provider notification.
  • Communicate test results and follow-up information according to provider orders and clinic protocols.
  • Assist with prescription refill requests and medication-related questions according to established procedures.
Medication Management
  • Administer medications and treatments as ordered and within the LPN scope of practice.
  • Prepare and administer injections as ordered.
  • Monitor patients for medication effectiveness and adverse reactions.
  • Complete medication reconciliation and communicate discrepancies to the provider.
  • Assist with medication refill requests, prior authorizations, and pharmacy communication as assigned.
  • Follow all medication storage, administration, documentation, and safety requirements.
Care Coordination
  • Coordinate patient care with providers, surgery scheduling, laboratories, imaging departments, pharmacies, hospitals, and other healthcare services.
  • Assist with scheduling follow-up appointments, procedures, testing, and referrals.
  • Help coordinate preoperative and postoperative patient needs.
  • Follow up on outstanding laboratory, imaging, and diagnostic results as directed.
  • Assist with ensuring patients receive timely follow-up and appropriate continuity of care.
Documentation and Compliance
  • Document patient care accurately and timely in the electronic medical record.
  • Maintain complete and accurate clinical documentation.
  • Follow organizational policies, procedures, infection prevention standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA requirements.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety initiatives.
Clinic Operations
  • Assist with maintaining efficient patient flow in a high-volume clinic environment.
  • Prepare rooms between patients and ensure adequate supplies are available.
  • Monitor inventory and communicate supply needs to the appropriate staff.
  • Assist with maintaining a clean, safe, organized clinical environment.
  • Work collaboratively with the entire clinic team to address changing patient volumes and priorities.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to assist in other clinic functions as needed.
QualificationsRequired
  • Graduate of an accredited Practical Nursing program.
  • Current, unrestricted LPN/LVN license in the state of practice.
  • Current BLS certification.
  • Ability to provide safe patient care within the LPN scope of practice.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and multitask effectively in a high-volume clinical environment.
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and compassion when working with patients and families.
Preferred
  • Previous experience in a physician office, ambulatory care, surgical clinic, or urology setting.
  • Experience with urological procedures and catheter care.
  • Experience with electronic medical records.
  • Experience with telephone triage and patient portal communication.
  • Experience working in a high-volume specialty clinic.

Work Environment

The LPN works in a fast-paced, high-volume outpatient Urology Clinic and must be able to effectively manage multiple responsibilities while maintaining patient safety, accuracy, efficiency, and excellent customer service. The position requires frequent interaction with patients, families, providers, clinical staff, and other departments.

Job Summary: Deliver care to patients utilizing the nursing process in accordance with established philosophy. Collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. Effectively interact with patients, families, & visitors while maintaining the standard of professional nursing. Provides physical and psychological support to patients.

Qualifications/Requirements: Must be a graduate of a school of nursing with current LPN or RN license by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. Current BLS Certification. Current TB test. Must pass WRMC Medication/Dosage Calculations Exam and IV Therapy Exam. Maintains annual unit specific competencies and education fair. Adheres to White River Health System's Standard of Behaviors.
