Job Description:
About the job
The Wall Street Journal is seeking an ambitious and versatile correspondent to cover the economy, society and geopolitics of South Asia, home to the world's most populous country, two nuclear-armed nations and rapidly developing economies.
India, the giant of the region as one of the world's largest economies and a leader of the developing world, is at a pivotal moment.
It faces fresh opportunities and challenges as artificial intelligence, demographic changes and geopolitics reshape both India and the world economy. It is generating fresh excitement in global business, as tech behemoths built giant data centers and companies like Apple expand their operations there as a hedge against growing tensions surrounding China.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has consolidated power at home and has emerged as a global leader for countries seeking a third way between the U.S. and Chinese spheres of influence.
At the same time, New Delhi is grappling with a fractious relationship with the U.S. that, after years of warming ties, has been eroded by clashes over immigration, trade and energy. Meanwhile, tensions with China - both a major trading partner and a geopolitical rival - continue to simmer.
In the broader South Asia region, Pakistan is seeking to strike a balance between engagement with the U.S. and deep economic and military ties with China. Youth movements are challenging leaders in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and Nepal; Afghanistan continues to suffer the fallout from the U.S. war and the Taliban's return to power.
A successful candidate will bring these business, political and societal themes to life through vivid, on-the-ground storytelling. You will work closely with colleagues in the region and beyond on one of today's most consequential geopolitical stories. You will tell the stories through text, graphics, video, podcasts and photos.
