Senior Ocean Marine Underwriter (Hull & Liability)

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Senior Ocean Marine Underwriter (Hull & Liability) based in the United States.

This is a strategic underwriting opportunity for an experienced marine insurance professional looking to take meaningful ownership of a specialized portfolio.
You’ll underwrite profitable new and renewal business across ocean marine risks, using your technical expertise to balance growth, pricing, and risk selection.
The role provides broad underwriting responsibility and the opportunity to build trusted relationships with agents and brokers across the marine market.
You’ll also contribute to policy servicing, risk reviews, sales initiatives, and the continued development of a high-performing marine portfolio.
Working in an entrepreneurial specialty insurance environment, you’ll have the autonomy to make informed underwriting decisions and influence business growth.
Success will require strong commercial judgment, market knowledge, communication skills, and a proactive approach to relationship management.
This role is well suited to a self-directed underwriter who wants to help scale a specialized marine business while advancing their career.

Accountabilities
  • Underwrite profitable new and renewal ocean marine business, applying sound risk selection, pricing, and portfolio management practices.
  • Evaluate marine risks across hull, protection and indemnity (P&I), marine general liability, excess, and related marine property exposures.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with assigned agents and brokers, serving as a trusted underwriting partner and responding effectively to market opportunities.
  • Review policy servicing requests and ensure appropriate underwriting decisions and documentation throughout the policy lifecycle.
  • Analyze inspection reports and compare findings with information gathered during underwriting to identify discrepancies, assess risk quality, and determine appropriate actions.
  • Develop and support sales and marketing initiatives that strengthen distribution relationships and contribute to profitable portfolio growth.
  • Maintain strong knowledge of regional marine markets and identify opportunities to expand relationships and business within target territories.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to support efficient underwriting operations, policy servicing, and portfolio performance.
  • Stay current with marine insurance developments, underwriting practices, licensing requirements, and relevant market trends through ongoing professional education.
  • Use available technology and automation tools effectively to support underwriting, communication, documentation, and operational efficiency.
  • Demonstrate ownership, sound judgment, and flexibility when managing complex risks, broker needs, and business priorities.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree or an appropriate insurance designation.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in commercial marine underwriting or closely related marine insurance experience.
  • Strong technical knowledge of marine general liability, hull/P&I, excess, and marine property products.
  • Solid understanding of the regional marine insurance market; national marine market knowledge is a plus.
  • Strong underwriting judgment with the ability to evaluate exposures, identify risk factors, and make commercially sound decisions.
  • Proven ability to develop and maintain productive agent and broker relationships.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with brokers, agents, clients, and internal stakeholders.
  • Comfortable using Microsoft products and company-specific automation and technology tools.
  • Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to work independently and take ownership of responsibilities.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple underwriting and servicing priorities effectively.
  • Willingness and ability to work extended hours when business needs require.
  • Commitment to continuing education and maintaining required insurance licensing.
  • Commercial mindset with an interest in supporting both profitable growth and long-term portfolio performance.
