Job Description

Early Childhood Substitute Teacher

Location: Howell and/or Fowlerville, Michigan (Livingston County)
Pay: $15 to $22 per hour, based on credentials and experience
Schedule: Weekdays, daytime shifts between 7:00 AM and 6:00 PM

ECE Subhub places substitute teachers in early childhood classrooms serving children from infancy through age five. Our partner sites include licensed child care centers and school district preschool programs throughout the Howell and Fowlerville area.

You provide your availability and your location, and we assign placements at sites near you. There are no evening, overnight, or weekend shifts, as the programs we serve operate during weekday hours only.

Substitute teaching has a reputation for being difficult work, and much of that comes from being sent into an unfamiliar classroom with no preparation. We operate differently. You will complete training before your first placement, you will know the site and what we know about the assignment before you accept it, and our team is available to you before and after your shift.

Position Overview

Substitutes step into classrooms in a teacher's absence, and the primary responsibility is maintaining continuity for the children. This includes supporting meals, transitions, rest periods, outdoor time, and the activities already planned for the day. You will work alongside the remaining classroom staff, maintain a safe environment, and provide a steady presence for children whose regular teacher is out.

Assignments vary, and the type of placement you receive depends on your credentials and experience. Substitutes newer to the field generally serve as an additional set of hands in a fully staffed room. Those with stronger credentials or more classroom experience are placed in assignments carrying primary responsibility for a classroom. As your qualifications grow, so does the range of assignments available to you.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet at least one of the following:

  • Experience working with children from birth through age five
  • An associate degree, or 18 college credits, in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Social Work, Human Services, Youth or Family Studies, or Elementary Education
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, Social Work, Human Services, Family or Youth Studies, or Elementary Education with a ZA or ZS endorsement
  • A current CDA credential

Adult and pediatric CPR certification is preferred. Candidates who are not currently certified can be directed to approved training providers.

All employment offers are contingent upon completion of a background check and fingerprinting. Our team provides instructions and support throughout that process.

Compensation and Benefits

Your rate is set at hire and is determined by your credentials and early childhood experience. Candidates holding a CDA credential or a relevant degree start at a higher rate than those qualifying through experience alone.

  • Weekends off
  • Earned sick time, accrued in accordance with Michigan law
  • Medical, dental, and vision coverage for employees working four or more days per week
  • Telehealth services, including mental health telehealth
  • Short-term disability and life insurance
  • 401(k)
  • Paid training
  • Financial support toward earning a CDA credential
Hiring Process

Applicants can expect to hear from our team within two business days. The process begins with a brief phone conversation covering your background and availability, followed by a virtual interview. Candidates who move forward receive an offer, complete onboarding paperwork and training, and are scheduled for their first placement.

We welcome applications from candidates who are prepared to support young children and want consistent weekday work in early childhood education.
