The City of American Canyon is seeking an experienced and collaborative leader to serve as our next Maintenance Supervisor for Sewer Collections. This is an exciting opportunity for a public works professional who is passionate about infrastructure reliability, employee development, operational excellence, and public service.

As a Maintenance Supervisor, you will lead a dedicated team responsible for maintaining and improving the City's wastewater collection system. You will oversee daily operations, develop staff, coordinate complex maintenance activities, and ensure the safe and reliable delivery of essential public services. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:


Leadership and Operations
  • Plan, organize, supervise, train, and evaluate assigned maintenance personnel.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to management staff.
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring the annual operating budget for the assigned work unit.
  • Develop performance expectations and measures to support efficient and effective operations.
  • Ensure staff compliance with safety regulations, procedures, and best practices.
  • Participate in employee development, performance management, and disciplinary processes as needed.
  • Respond to emergencies and coordinate after-hours response activities.

Sewer Collection System Responsibilities
  • Oversee maintenance, repair, and construction activities associated with the City's wastewater collection system.
  • Review water and sewer plans for new installations and system improvements.
  • Oversee and participate in Underground Service Alert (USA) utility marking activities.
  • Manage and support the sewer overflow notification program.
  • Coordinate and participate in flow testing and system assessment activities.
  • Oversee work orders, inspections, maintenance records, and operational reporting.
  • Coordinate planned shut-downs and maintenance activities with contractors, utility providers, public safety personnel, and other stakeholders.
  • Supervise the operation and maintenance of specialized equipment, including vacuum trucks, backhoes, loaders, compressors, and other construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Maintain records related to maintenance activities, equipment usage, and regulatory compliance.

Community and Team Engagement
  • Collaborate with internal departments, contractors, utility agencies, and community partners.
  • Support City-sponsored events and community activities as needed.
  • Foster a positive team culture that values respect, accountability, communication, and continuous improvement.

Education and Experience
Equivalent to either:
  • One (1) year of full-time experience as a Senior Maintenance Worker with the City of American Canyon;

OR

  • Five (5) years of progressively responsible maintenance and construction experience in water distribution, wastewater collection, or closely related public works operations, including at least two (2) years of supervisory experience.

Knowledge of
  • Principles and practices of supervision, employee development, and performance management.
  • Wastewater collection system operations, maintenance, and repair techniques.
  • Occupational safety principles and safe work practices.
  • Construction methods, equipment, materials, and maintenance procedures.
  • Regulatory requirements related to wastewater collection systems.
  • Reading and interpreting maps, construction plans, specifications, and technical manuals.
  • Microsoft Office applications and specialized maintenance management software.
Ability to
  • Lead, motivate, and develop a high-performing team.
  • Effectively organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple projects and operational activities.
  • Analyze maintenance needs and implement practical solutions.
  • Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Exercise sound judgment and work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Build productive working relationships with staff, contractors, agencies, and community members.

License Requirements
  • Possession of a valid California Class C Driver License at the time of appointment. Individuals who do not meet this requirement due to a physical disability will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.
  • Depending on operational needs, some positions may require possession of a valid California Class A or Class B Driver License with Tanker Endorsement at the time of appointment.


Certificates:

This position requires the following certificates (Failure to obtain any of the required licenses is cause for release during probation):

  • Water Distribution Certificate II or III within nine months of appointment to the position.
Probationary Period
  • Appointment to this position is subject to successful completion of the City's probationary period.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed primarily in an outdoor environment on a year-round basis and includes:

  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, squatting, climbing, and performance of heavy manual labor.
  • Frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 75 pounds.
  • Frequent use of maintenance tools, equipment, and vehicles.
  • Exposure to loud noise, chemicals, fumes, weather conditions, and other environmental factors associated with wastewater collection system operations.
  • Frequent interaction with coworkers, contractors, and the public.

Additional Requirements
  • Evening, weekend, standby, on-call, and emergency response work may be required.
  • Pursuant to California Government Code §3101 and City ordinances, all City employees are designated as Disaster Service Workers and may be assigned emergency responsibilities during disasters or other emergencies.
